Housing and Mold/Mildew

Ok everyone, I need some advice about my current house.

We just got our water bill and for one month it was over $800, and the bad thing is that we have reported several leaks and faulty faucets to our landlord and he hasnt done anything about them. SO my first question is what should I do about our water bill. Should I tell the water company he has been the problem in our water use being too high (mind we are in a drought with water limitations) and see what they say?

Also we seem to have a leak in our ceiling over our laundry room (beside my bedroom) and I have noticed a black substance on the sheet rock. I believe it to be mold/mildew growth and was wondering if that would be enough for me to opt out of my lease without any penalties.

If anyone has any advice please let me know

I think that all depends on the conditions of your lease. Get it out and look it over carefully. If you still have questions, find a lawyer.

It may be too late for this advice to help you in your current situation, but in the future, be diligent in documenting complaints regarding poor property management. I had a crappy landlord in grad school and discovered that even copious note-taking wasn't good enough documentation: look into certified mail if necessary.

Good luck!

Also be sure to check if you signed a mold addendum with your landlord. The addendum might state that you're responsible for any mold growth even if it's from a structural problem (depending on the addendum...there are some out there that state that the tenant is responsible for all mold).

Not going to comment on this!

You know how to contact me.

Change my mind!

If you have some leaks and drips, they can be easy to fix.

Present the bills to him. $800 is a way over board for water even with leaks!!!!!!! Call the local utilitie and have them check the meter, called benched testing!

The roof leaking is the land lords problem!

If he doesn't, then find the local athourity and notify them. You do have some teneant rights. Try Code Violations and have them come out and see if they will handle it.
