Mascots...
Hey, even though I'm not on campus all that much any more, I've always wondered about a somewhat questionable topic.
If a member of a Greek Organization also spends time as his/her school's mascot, is it okay to wear the org's letters while dressed as the school's mascot during one of the org's functions, like a probate show or parade? I would think it's cool, but I could see why some would not find it okay. Has this ever happened or does anyone have any insight? Thanks. |
From working with the Student Activities office at my school, I've been told that when a person is wearing the mascot outfit, they are only representing the university, not his or her specific organization. It makes sense to keep with tradition/continuity, but if our mascot showed up with (any org's) letters on, I don't think I'd care personally.

This seems a little weird to me. If it's just one of the organization's functions I suppose it might be okay. I don't know what a probate show is but if the mascot is in a parade I think wearing letters is kind of inappropriate.

They were always really big about keeping our mascot neutral in everything. You weren't even allowed to depict the mascot in any way that might indicate whether it is male or female. So letters wouldn't go over well.
|
While you're in the mascot suit, you are representing the University. I don't even think the person who plays our mascot even has access to the suit outside of University sanctioned appearances at games and such. So the wearing of letters as mascot is likely not allowed.

When I was in school, the mascot was Greek. I don't know if I could ever imagine Brutus Buckeye wearing his letters. It just wouldn't work with the big buckeye head.
BTW....Brutus always wears a rugby shirt in the school's colors. |
The actual costumed mascot at WIU never wore letters, but the statue of the mascot sitting outside the stadium sure did. He usually got them about Midnight on Saturday.;)

it was, and still is, a CLOSELY guarded secret who the mascot is... no one knows their real identity so for them to wear any other paraphernalia except the school's athletic gear is BLASPHEMY!!!
|
^^That's the way that it was at my school.

All the opposition really makes sense. I thought about it after I posted, and realized how wrong it would be if I went to Georgetown, lol.
The only reason I brought up the topic was because a couple of my bruhs got to be Goldy (the wildest Golden Gopher ever!!!). I thought about trying out for it so I could spin my head all crazy. |
