The Great Debaters movie and Omega Psi Phi.
The upcoming movie 'The Great Debaters', which is in post-production now, stars Denzel Washington as Melvin B. Tolson, who led the historically black Wiley College Debate Team to challenge the Harvard Debate Team for the national championship. Prof. Tolson was a member of Omega Psi Phi, a member of Beta Chapter (Lincoln Univ. PA) when Langston Hughes was there in the '20s. He was the managing editor of The Oracle, the fraternity's organ in the late '30s and was a graduate scholarship winner also. Tolson, a modernist poet, later became the Poet Laureate of Liberia.

i just saw the trailer the other day, can't wait for it to come out.
2007 is Denzel's year for sure :D |
I saw the movie today and I enjoyed it, definitely a must see! I also did a little background research and it turns out that they actually debated against USC and won not Harvard. I found a nice article about one of the main characters, civil rights leader James Farmer Jr. Farmer was part of the "Big Four." http://www.marshallnewsmessenger.com...xsvc=7&cxcat=5
It also turns out that Alpha Phi Alpha Brother Dr. Hobart Jarrett was apart of that debate team during that time. http://www.patt-nhf.org/documents/Dr%20Jarrett%20bio.pdf I love history!:):D |
