Military Spouses/Fiances/Girlfriends

I've only been with my boyfriend for going on 5 months and we just found out that he'll be going to a unit that has already deployed and so he of course will be joining them sometime in January probably, right after he reports there. I've been the girlfriend to a deployed soldier before (when I was a senior in college) and it didn't go very well - but I hadn't been dating that guy very long so it ended while he was gone. With my current boyfriend, I definitely see it lasting a long time, maybe even, dare I say, the M word...? Which is why I think I'm taking this a little harder than I did with that other guy. At the same time though, he was infantry and my current boyfriend is an officer and not infantry so his situation over there will be a little different. However, last time he went, one of his best friends died, so I imagine he's very scared to go again.

My question is if there are any other women out there who are married to/dating a deployed soldier/sailor/marine/airman. I think it'd be great to have a thread for discussions and venting on this within GC.

GEN Alum is not currently deployed but he certainly has been in the past. Here's hoping that your sweetheart and his men stay unharmed during their mission.

Only way to go. LOL.

I dated an Army guy in 2005 for about 8 months. He wasn't a very high rank or anything. We were only dating for like 4 months when he got deployed. Needless to say, that relationship didn't last long.

I'm now dating a Marine Corps officer and the situation is much different. He works in recruitment (specifically recruiting college grads for the Officer Candidate School) so he is non-deployable (for now) and we get to see each other fairly often. The situation is a complete difference from the last military guy I dated, and so much better.

Not particularly sure where we're headed, but it's been great so far. Best of luck with your man!

There was a similar thread started a few months ago: Military Spouses, Parents and Families. I take it from that thread that there are others arounde GC in similar places in life, although that thread is only a page or two long.

There's also this thread that might have some interesting insights: Would you marry someone in the military? (I haven't read through it, though, so I'm just guessing.)

I don't mean this as a "do a search" post -- just thought these previous threads might have something of value to your question.

Good luck to you and your boyfriend!

Yes, please join us in the other thread. I am hoping that will be a check in point for all of military wives/gfs on GC!
