Please define "snap bid"
 

Somebody please give me your definition of snap bid!!!

Actually, I think that snap bids are different in that, if some chapters make quota,and there are girls that are not matched with a house (before bids are handed out) the house can opt to extend a bid to the girl even if she was not on their bid list, and the house in question was not on her pref card.

As far as I know, at least at my school, COB is the entire list of girls who signed up for rush originally, whether or not they completed rush, or signed a bid card. Only girls who signed bid cards who were't matched after pref night end up on snap bid, which is given to houses who did not make quota. Snap Bid lists allow for snap bids to be offered, ie. welcome to my sorority if you accept. COB lists commonly involve inviting those rushees who did not complete rush to come back and rush on an informal basis, or, i suppose, they too can be offered bids. But the main difference between the two, as far as i know, is snap bid is only given if you signed a bid card, and COB list is for those who didn't. If someone thinks I'm wrong, please feel free to correct me.

Snap bidding is a process used when a woman going through formal recruitment doesn't receive a bid from her top three choices on her pref card. If the woman appears on another sorority's bid list and that sorority has not reached quota yet through bid matching, that sorority may offer the woman a bid. The woman is called by the chapter and offered a bid after she is notified by the Greek Advisor that she has not received a bid from her choices. She has the choice to either accept the "snap bid" or she may then COB.

Does this make any sense?

Snap bids at our school can also be offered to women that have dropped out or rush during earlier rounds, they don't have to sign a bid card or even go to preferences. Many of my sisters were from snap bids. COB is the process that is done year round, outside of formal recruitment. At my campus bid day lasts from 3pm of the day that bids are extended until 3pm the next day, from then on out it is COB. Women that go through COB do not have to sign up for formal recruitment at anytime. If a woman is not signed to a house, or hasn't accepted a bid for a year and did not sign a bid card and match, she is elgible for COB. I am the Vice President of Recruitment for my chapter, and I have to work very hard with all of these options. They can be confusing. IF your house makes quota and is at chapter total then you don't have to worry about doing snap bids or COB. Hope that helps!

I'm begining to think, and other's might agree, that while snap bid is probably fairly universally and similarly applied at most schools, methods of COB differ at different schools. I know the use of the COB list has changed throughout the years at my school (ie. offered along with the snap bid list, or held back until such time as the snap bid list is depleted). Either way, I dont' think there is one rule that is used at all schools regarding COB.

Here's the official answer, from the Green Book, which many posters here have referred to:

a snap bid is only for houses not at quota. it happens right there at bid matching (ideally) for a woman who could not be placed with any of her preference choices because they already filled quota. A house that she did not preference, but that did list her on their bid list, or snap bid list, has the opportunity to offer her a bid right there before bid day occurs. Ideally, no one will ever even know she is a snap bid, although people often figure it out because she probably did not attend that chapter's preference.

COB is for houses that did not fill quota, even with attempted snap bids and/ or are not at house total. Most Nationals and NPC advise that any chapter that did not meet these standards should COB all year, if it takes that long, to get up to total/ quota. In most cases, COB cannot start till after Bid day, but some campuses let the groups do it so that anyone who is COB'ed can join in on the bid day festivities.

I just want to clarify some misconceptions and mistakes with the snap bidding process that schools seem to be making:
1. It is for any rushee who attended any portion of rush. She does not have to attend a chapters pref or be a no match to get a snap. In fact s rushee who single intential preferences (aka "suicide") is still eligible for a snap

2. For a sorority to extend a snap bid to a women she did not have to appear on the chpater's bid list.

Snap bidding is a great way for groups to get women into their chapter and quickly fill to quota!!!

I would assume snap and COB are the same. Countinuous Open Bidding ONLY happens if a chapers doesn't fill quota and wishes to extend a bid to a Potential New Member who did not receive one from any other chapter. I think PNMs are not told about this until after the fact so not many peolpe other than recruitment chairs know what it is.
