Scandal Brews at Oral Roberts University

TULSA, Okla. (Oct. 6) - Twenty years ago, televangelist Oral Roberts said he was reading a spy novel when God appeared to him and told him to raise $8 million for Roberts' university, or else he would be "called home."
Now, his son, Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts, says God is speaking again, telling him to deny lurid allegations in a lawsuit that threatens to engulf this 44-year-old Bible Belt college in scandal.

Power, money and privilege can corrupt anyone. Many Christian television ministries have fallen prey to this. There's a price to be paid if you want to enjoy the "world" and serve God also. The Bible says a lot about this; just look at the rise and fall of the Davidic dynasty from David to Solomon to Rehoboam. It's more complicated than all these people being Elmer Gantry-like figures. It should be a cautionary tale to any and all who seek to do good, serve God or change the landscape of politics.

"Colleagues fear for the reputation of the university and the future of the Roberts' ministry, which grew from Southern tent revivals to one of the most successful evangelical empires in the country, hauling in tens of millions of dollars in contributions a year. "

Having grown up in an extremely conservative Christian family, and attending many of these tent meetings, this is the part of these huge evangelical movements that has always concerned me.

What is their real agenda? The Allmighty or the allmighty dollar?

I had an apologetics teacher in highschool that LOVED to tell that story, and follow up with "Isn't getting 'called home' the ultimate goal? I just sent him a post card that said 'Say "Hi" to the Big Guy for me'". :)

What kind of name is ORAL ROBERTS?

Sounds porny to me.

Do any of you see poor preachers like in this profession?

Oral Roberts, Jimmy Falwell, James Baker, Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson, etal? No.

So, where does the money come from and where does it go?

Al Sharpton is a real piece of work.
Claims he has not money; that he is paid by his foundation or what ever it is.
He has also never paid his, IIRC, civil fines from the Brawlly (sp) case. Never speaks of it.
