Announcing new mbr class in newspaper?
I was looking at some back issues of the Penn State paper, and had forgotten that the sororities announced their new member class in ads in the paper - probably because they traumatized me by not spelling my name correctly :D
It brought back memories of how difficult it was to see your rush crushes go elsewhere, and how frustrating in the years when a sorority wasn't doing as well in recruitment ("Wow, x has 28, y has 23, and we only got 16!) Is this still done? |
Not every sorority does this on my campus, but mine did after we were initiated and it was such a pleasant surprise!
|
They do it at Ole Miss too. It's fun to see which PNMs went where!
|
my sorority put in a small ad welcoming the new members, i have it cut out and in the scrapbook. two of the fraternities also put in ads. i don't think the other two sororities do it, though. its a small school with 3 sororities and 80ish pnms so you know where everyone went.
we also get a letter from the president of one fraternity congratulating us on our membership. |
Yes, and I believe it's called the sunshine law down here.
Totally kidding. |
Sororities at my school have done it in the past, but no one did it this year. I always thought it was cute!
|
At Duke all the sororities always did pledge class lists (I don't remember fraternities doing it). The campus newspaper also does an article with a chart of results for all the sororities and fraternities after recruitment!
At Cal they never did the lists, while I was an advisor there anyway. |
IU still does it.
|
At my school, chapters that missed quota often made up additional names to look like they hadn't...you often saw names of actives, or the occasional "Cameron Diaz" pledging a chapter.
|
Cornell sororities use to do it. I always thought it was cute!

Most interested sorority members would know who did or did not make quota in formal rush, er, recruitment, wouldn't they? We always did.

I know that I see a lot of these sorts of ads just prior to (or immediately following) initiation. As far as seeing where your rush crush went and who got who, I think that Facebook is more popular than The Collegian for that. |

And I used to love those ads too, we used to put them in for everything! Pledge classes, seniors graduating, sisters going away for internships, congratulations for awards, thank yous to other houses participating in our philanthropy, to greek week partners, etc. They were so cute! |
UF did it while I was there. And they would do it again for new initiated classes. I do not think all sororities did- but many did place ads.
