Favorite Gamma Phi quotes

Please share your favorite quote from a Gamma Phi Beta sister.

Here's one of mine:

"We must encourage harmony and give social and moral values and get rid of snobbishness if we are to survive in a world that wants value received."- Lillian Thompson, Editor of The Crescent, 1936

Here's another good one!

"Now men and women are separate but unequal. We should be hand in hand; in fact we should have our arms around each other!"

- Cloris Leachman, Gamma Phi Beta, comedienne, actress, runner up to Miss America 1946

Ok you girls are duds. I dare you all to get busy and find a Gamma Phi from the notable Gamma Phis list and google up a good quote to inspire us or make us laugh or just introduce us to a sister of note!

Now here's an interesting one from Dr. Erastus O. Haven, who of course was the father of Frances E. Haven, and who served as a bishop in the Methodist Church is in last years. He was traveling in the South trying to expand the Methodist Church and preaching against discrimination and bigotry. Here he is writing to Frances and Rev. Charles Moss (Frances' hubby and designer of the famed crescent and pearls!) about his directives to the missionaries...

"You are not to build up a Northern Church. If I were you I would interest myself in the welfare of Texas, seek the prosperity of Texas. I would swear by Texas!" - E.O. Haven

Hey, all my books are packed! But I love that quote . . .I swear by Texas, too

What an awesome quote!

Yup, even though I now live in Connecticut, I am a Texan through and through.

OK- I found a REALLY good one that y'all are going to love...it's historic...and sweet....BUT...I'm going to hold out until someone else jumps in here and comes up with a quote!

I'm amazed at what you can find on line with minimal searching.....

So if you want me to share...get busy....

SWTXBelle 11-02-2007 08:40 PM

Okay, I have used goodsearch AND google - typed in founders' names, gamma phi beta quotes - and I'm getting nothing. If only I had my books! Drat, drat, drat.

"(Because of the war) the men are becoming fewer and fewer, alas, and we are compelled to study this year to vary the monotony."

--Margaret Walsh (Beta, 1918)

.....Kelly :)

C'mon bejazd - I TRIED. I really, really did. I'm a dud - I admit it.
Give us the quote!

Okay, okay. Hilarious Navane! I hope you like this one!

This is a pearl from Sara Morrow Preston, Kappa chapter, in the January 1906 Crescent.

"We are all much alike, are we not? Each chapter has its butterflies and its bookworms; its grave, weak saints and adorable little sinners.... all striving together within the strongest of bonds toward the highest and noblest ideals."

She goes on to report that the chapter has very high standards and that they promote the sisters participation in dramatic, literary, philanthropic and social pursuits but that they do not engage in playing sports in public or getting involved in campus politics (which probably meant supporting some guy running for an office!)

Oh the horror....what if someone saw their bloomies while they played badminton on the lawn!!!!

Now what would you be....a grave, weak saint or an adorable little sinner???

"If you can learn to love yourself and all the flaws, you can love other people so much better. And that makes you so happy."

AND

"I've finally graduated from I don't give a hoot."

Kristin Chenowith

a little gift for Founder's Day

If you look in Google book search, enter The Crescent of Gamma Phi Beta. I came up with a series of Crescents from 1906. you can't print it out, and I had a hard time creating a link, but there are great pictures and it's great reading! I loved the personals, esp. an announcement for Ms. Wilson about entertaining President Roosevelt and his wife. and the early pictures of the Alpha chapter house...and a report from Stanford and Cal after the SF earthquake. enjoy!

Ok, this isn't exactly a quote, but it's something I think is perfect for this thread. This short poem made up the final words of a toast (speech) given by Lindsey Barbee, specifically the last toast at the closing banquet of the 1913 Convention. The toast was called: "The Girl of the Future - This Ideal Gamma Phi"

"I will be true--for there are those who trust me,
I will be pure--for there are those who care,
I will be strong,--for there is much to suffer,
I will be brave--for there is much to dare,
I will be friend of all--the foe, the friendless,
I will be giving--and forget the gift,
I will be humble--for I know my weakness,
I will look up, and love and laugh and lift!”

Love that pbear. I think you made my day. :)

Here's one I found, not by a Gamma Phi but I think you'll enjoy it anyway...

"The smile that flickers on a baby's lips when he sleeps- does anyone know where it was born? Yes, there is a rumor that a young pale beam of a crescent moon touched the edge of a vanishing cloud, and there the smile was born in the dream of a dew washed morning." R. Tagore 1912
