NEW YORK - One person carrying a rifle in a bag was arrested on the St. John's Queens campus Wednesday afternoon, police said. The man appeared to have a President Bush mask, according to preliminary information from law enforcement officials.

Police sources said the man is of Guyanese descent and is apparently a student.

Authorities asked students and faculty across the campus to stay indoors. There was a large police presence on the campus. Areas near the site of the man's apprehension have been locked down.

Well, I mean... Queens isn't exactly "nice"...I mean, some areas are, I guess. I live close to it, and I don't go to Queens.... I can't stand it there... (call me elitist for living in the Y.O.....) :p
One of my coworkers, his neice goes to St. Johns and was at class during that time, scary stuff.

(These types of things don't happen that often around here though)

I'm not sure I get your point.

Crime happens everywhere - even the cheesiest suburb has murders, and rural areas often have their own drug issues . . . but there's really no way to get around the fact that there are more crime reports in "bad" areas than "good", and many colleges (including USC and JHU, from the other thread) are not in good areas, by necessity.

Now, if you want to argue that crime rates in "bad" areas are due to increased police presence, etc. then feel free to argue that - but that's not at all what you're saying, and I'm not sure anyone here is certified enough to have that chicken-and-egg standoff.

The area around St. Johns is definitely a pretty decent part of Queens.

lol sorry :o, it's Yonkers, outside NYC, basically next to the bronx... it's a weird area, the river towns are right there (hoity toity nice areas, and some areas of yonkers are really great.) I don't live in such a great area though, and the rent is still pretty high....

Decent is a great word to use isn't it? It doesn't convey that it's affluent or run down. It's just decent. Hah. Either way, it's not exactly where most people dream of living. Plus it's within walking distance to one of the worst neighborhoods in NY, Jamaica. I'll stick to my neighborhood ;)

I bet if I left him on a corner in east Baltimore borderline between a 'rough' neighborhood and nice (JHU comes to mind) he would freak out.

Hehe, went for a semester in Hillcrest before we moved and I ended my high school career in Forest Hills.

Me love Forest Hills.

Yeah, I was wondering if the poster is familiar with that area. I have love for Jamaica (went to JHS, and they have great shopping deals on the Ave), but I wouldn't describe the area surrounding SJU as "nice". Though, I probably would use "decent" or "it could be worse".

I mean technically, it's not the worst area. The bronx has by far the worst areas in ny. That part of union turnpike is pretty safe since it's well lit and all. But it's right up against Jamaica which blows. The shopping deals are pretty funny, but you sit there for an hour going back and forth with a korean guy to drop the price 20 bucks on a pair of kicks as long as you pay in cash. I'm not sure if the colliseum is still around but that was one dank place.

Forrest hills was just a haven for goofy russian immigrants. Lots of hair gel and shiny shirts.

Wow. Anyway, I don't even think Jamaica is so bad. But then again, I probably have a higher tolerance for low-income neighborhoods. My grandmother lived in Queens (minutes from Jamaica Ave) for the last 20 years of her life, and pronounced it safe and comfortable. Of course, she grew up on Jamaica the island, and there are parts of Kingston that make some of the worst areas in New York look quite nice by comparison :rolleyes:.

To keep the discussion going, define the following, if you please:

A "bad" neighborhood is...
A "decent" neighborhood is...
A "good" neigborhood is...
An "excellent" neighborhood is...

A "bad" neighborhood is...high crime, low income, boarded up homes, high police visibilty

A "decent" neighborhood is...somewhat upkept but has it's rough edges, mix of owners and renters, relatively safe

A "good" neigborhood is...more owners than renters, low crime, low trash, a place to raise kids


An "excellent" neighborhood is... is there such a thing?

Everyone has a different standard. But I just want to point out that you said you didn't think Jamaica is "so bad". From the tone, you recognize it's not the best. It's not as scary as the Bronx or the island of Jamaica, but it's also not as safe as many other neighborhoods.
