The Wheel of Time series was at 11 books at the time of his passing. He was working on the 12th book.

That's sad. :( The loss of an author, particularly an author fantasy, is like a loss of imagination in the world.

(Although honestly, his books... not the best.)

Thats a freaking disaster. I read 11 of his books. He deliberately drew it out to milk it for money . .. which is fine ... but he didn't finish them?? Damn irresponsible.

Ripped off King Arthur like you wouldn't believe as well.

Here's hoping he finished them but was just holding it back so that his fans can toast him while reading whatever really happens to the Dragon Reborn.

I, however, made it to the 8th book before I just couldn't get through it anymore.

I read the last one and it didn't suck! I was really happy about that until I realised how underwhelming an achievement that is. Apparently he spent a good amount of his last days dictating the book to others so SOMEONE will be writing book 12.

Honestly, it's not like Brian Herbert taking up for Frank- the new authors on this one have a lot to work with and can write something better than his output of the last few years.

RIP to the author, even if I stopped liking his books.

the new Dune books . . well I didn't like them.

Dune. Great.

Dune Messiah, Children of Dune . . . Even God emperor of Dune. I suppose he needed mortgage money badly.

Heretics and Chapter House though . . really good stuff.

Ditto. I liked Dune, but I realized I was reading the sequels for the sake of the first one. In a "it has to get better, I should get through this" sort of way. And it got WEIRD(er). But I haven't picked up the newer ones. I'll have to check them out.

Did you read heretics or chapterhouse? They were more in the tradition of the first dune book, but better written I thought.

Nope, haven't read anything by his son.

James 09-17-2007 07:43 PM

No no no.

Heretics and chapterhouse were written by Frank Herbert (the dad) and take place maybe . . 1-2 (or so) thousand years after God Emperor of Dune.

But they are much better written than the previous dune sequels. More like the original Dune.

Yeah the last 3 Frank wrote were... interesting.

The ones his son wrote almost all suck (the prequel books are truly awful). So it's just a bummer all round, lol.

James 09-17-2007 08:42 PM

Yes. I suppose the money is worth more than his Dad's good name and the reputation/memory of a really respected Fictional Universe.

Perhaps he should leave his Dad's shadow and show he can write something else.

Doh. I guess I just stopped paying attention after not being able to finish... I think it was God Emperor of Dune. I'll check them out! :)

My husband read all of his books and was pretty pissed last night when he found out. Apparently Jordan was in the middle of writing the second to last book in the series, according to the article we read last night.

Drolefille 09-18-2007 12:58 PM

Word is that he left enough information with others, via dictation and notes, for them to finish at least the book if not the series.
