Dubai Hotel/Condo Tower surpasses Toronto's CN Tower in Height

The CN Tower may look just the same today, but it's no longer a world-beater.
The United Arab Emirates' upstart Burj Dubai, still under construction, has reached 555 metres, two metres taller than Canada's pride and joy. When it's finished late next year, Burj Dubai will top 800 metres, with 165 storeys of apartments, shops, hotel rooms and office space.

Rest of It

553 metres = 1814.3 ft
800 metres = 2624.67 ft

Dubai is on my lists of places to go before I die. One of the things I want to see is the Palm:

The palms is great. I mean aside from causing mass environmental damage it's also incredibly cheesy. The whole place is cheesy in the same way that Las Vegas is. It's beyond artificial.

Beware of culture shock. The shopping is great, but they have murals of their leader painted on the side of damn near every tall building in the city. (I thought it was a LITTLE much....) And DONT go anywhere without a male escort if you are female. It's not safe.

Dubai was one of the very few liberty ports I wish I would have just stayed on the damn ship for. I'm not knocking the culture - it was just too much for me to handle as a 21 year old bratty American.

Thank you for the candid advice! I'll be sure I stick close to my hubby at all times!

I really enjoyed my time in Dubai when I visited there and I would say that I did feel safe (1998). That being said, if you dress provocatively, you will invite unwanted, overt attention. Remember to dress with "modesty and decency" in mind and that you should be "covered" (i.e. a t-shirt is fine, but a tank top is not...the shoulders are a no-no & definitely no cleavage.). This might not be to your liking, but remember that you are a guest in their country and that your rights do not follow you around the world, so best to adapt to the culture and do as the locals do. In addition to shoulders being a no-no, same with showing your knees (or maybe that was Bahrain?), so wear pants or a long skirt. Generally speaking, as a Westerner, you do not need to cover your face or hair (you may be asked to cover your hair if you were to enter a mosque, but that would happen if you were to enter a Greek Orthodox Church too, so it wasn't a big deal to me).

Dubai is one of seven "emirates" in the United Arab Emirates; here they are: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain. If you travel there, do your research and be informed of their "decency laws", for example, Sharjah is a completely "dry" emirate -- the sale, possession and consumption of alcohol is banned. If you cross into Sharjah with booze that you bought in Dubai or Abu Dhabi or whatever, and are caught, you would be in supreme isht.
