Tell me about New Orleans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi! I am reading A Streetcar Named Desire (absolutely LOVE, LOVE the play!!) for English class, and the setting is in New Orleans, in the French Quarter. Please tell me more about New Orleans! My teacher raves and raves about the city--he loves the food, the aura, the beautiful homes, etc. He said that we all must go someday, LOL. It sounds so charming! I really want to go to New Orleans on vacation some day! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif THANKS!

I can't wait to read the posts about this subject. I am addicted to the Anne Rice novels, most of which are set in New Orleans and have long been fascinated by this city!

New Orleans rocks for partying!!!! I've been there twice (once this year for Mardi Gras which was crazy!) and I loved both times!
Mardi Gras was a bit crowded...we ended up staying away from Bourbon St. but still in the Quarter cause it was too busy! Drinks are great and the people are awesome! Food is okay (I HATE spicy food so I didn't like it so much...but everyone else loved it!) You should definately go sometime chicky! NO rules!!!!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif ------------------ Vera Sister Plum #13 Iota Beta Chi Sorority Webmaster http://welcome.to/iotabetachi |
I'm a New Orleans girl. I've lived in the 'burbs of NOLA all my life. Its one of the most wonderful places in the world. (I'm a bit biased).
The food is amazing - I can't go anywhere else and get good food - I've been spoiled by living here. Its funny when you're a native, because things start to revolve around food. Crawfish Season, King Cake Season, Shrimp Season, Crab Season. Eating is a way of life. The French Quarter is full of history, but its been turned really touristy. I rarely ever go to Burbon street. I've never eaten a Lucky Dog and I've never had a Hurricane. You'll find that's the same for most other locals as well. The people here are awesome. Southern hospitality is at its best in NOLA. We're just a bunch of fun loving people who love to party! |
I went to New Orleans the summer before my senior year...so that was in 1997. I am from the midwest so I was kinda scared to go but I went none-the-less. I LOVED IT. Coming from Nebraska, I found the city full of culture and uniqueness. I consumed it in everything we did and everywhere we went.
The food, the air, the people, the sounds; it's all a different world. We stayed in the Ponchatrain Hotel which is on St. Charles Ave. We were told that it was the first Hotel in New Orleans so I felt like I was really touching a piece of history. The trolly ran right in the middle of St. Charles Ave and was the main way to commuter from area to area. Bourbon Street was different. I suppose I'd have a different oppinion of it NOW that I'm older, but for a lil' Nebraska girl who was naive in the ways of the world...I saw things that I was shocked to see. I really enjoyed the French Market where I learned the success to bartering. I had so much fun I blew a hundred dollars collecting many items to remember NO by. Likewise, the French Cafe was a neat site. I loved their Ice Coffe and - I'm gonna slaughter the spelling - bengeits. YUMMY. I was meaning to try alligator but people said it tastes like chicken so I skipped out on that. But I did try some cajun and boy was it good. A little too much for my stomach to handle, but good. Another neat thing is how beautiful and historically rich the streets and its buildings are. I took a ton of pictures of the buildings, churches...etc. One of my friends got her palm read, which was exciting. The malls were neat too. And down by the river is more exciting as it's just a beautiful site. Now I was there for a National Church Gathering, so we also had a chance to reach out into the community and do some volunteering. We went into an area that I would consider to be like projects. We cleaned up the streets, playgrounds...etc. We actually uncovered a whole parkinglot. Since the sea level is different there things like sidewalks can easily get grown over. It was an amazing experience. Another really neat thing about NO that I didn't get to see first hand, are the cemetaries. They are mosuliums like in Romeo and Juliet. I saw them from a distance, but supposidly they have street signs in the actual cemetary so people can navigate in it and not get lost. Layola University was beautiful and Canal Street was really neat too. Just an overall NEAT place to visit. I recommend probably NOT going there during Mardi Gras if you're looking to really TAKE IN the atmosphere. Anyway, sorry so long and random...but I would LOVE to go back for a honeymoon someday. Such a great place. Hootie ------------------ What do you get when you cross an Alpha Omicron Pi and a Sigma Phi Epsilon? A beautiful Chi Omega!!! we roadtripped down to NO for spring break - we had a blast, definitely knocked down a few lucky dogs and hurricanes as stated above, proving that we were tourists (well all of us but one). it's a blast - there's so much cool stuff to do and see, and nightlife's positively sick. definitely one of those things you have to go do to understand, because us tellin ya doesn't give the full effect.

Yeah I thought the Ponchatrain Hotel was neat and very historic. Too bad I don't remember a whole lot around it. There were apartments and another hotel around it. Across from it was also the Eifle...do you know what I'm talking about? LOL. If you do let me know. LOL Hootie |
Hootie,
Across from the Ponchartrain Hotel is called the Red Room. Its an awesome restaurant/club. They have a *great* swing dancing night. Its been listed as one of the best places to propose in the US. BTW, when you're in NOLA, if you wanna blend in, don't call it the trolley. Call it the Streetcar http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif |
I love Jack Dempsey's but I prefer Deanie's. It's in Bucktown, baby!!! (a section in the suburb of Metairie) Another good restaurant is Drago's, also in Metairie, and they have THE BEST charbroiled oysters. These are oysters on the half shell broiled in garlic butter with parmesean cheese. YUMMY!
Carnival season is my favorite time of the year. I belong to 3 Krewes. |
I loved my trip to New Orleans. The people are very nice, the music is awesome, and food is great. We went last October around holloweeen and they were having a fesival called Voodoo fest. The culture down there is alot like some thing you would see like in a diffrent country or something. Its a fun place, I loved it. The Garden distrect is incredible, the houses are so pretty! and the trollies are a bunch of fun. I love the city vibe. And N.O. defintly has that vibe. We were there like 3 days, and thats enough. I only got maybe 10 hour sleep the whole time i was down there. We have pictures and i would love to show them off if anyone wants to see them..
Peace me xoxo |
Thanks everyone for the replies...NOLA sounds seriously like a differnt world!! Keep the replies coming, thanks!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
