GHB, roofies and a friend in need
My best friend went out with her boyfriend for a 1 year anniversary celebration, for a drink. She had 3 drinks (vodka tonics and 1 plain red bull) then took off from her BF got in her car and peeled out (without him) She ended up 45 minutes from her house in a ditch, with her BAC at .27. THIS MAKES NO SENSE. She was charged for a DWI (and thank god she was ok and didn't hurt anyone) and she's never drove drunk and never would, she wasn't even supposed to drive that night. She has absolutely NO recollection of waht happened until she was laying in a ditch. (and no her bf didn't and wouldn't drug her)
I've looked up some articles, and obviously they list the dangers of these drugs, but this is one that seemed the most similar. My question to all of you is: what do you know about these drugs? have you heard of this happening before? what should she do? I've already urged her to get a blood and urine test done to see if these drugs are in her system, but she has no health insurance. I said that it would help her during her court case, but I'm in NY and she's in Missouri and I can't get down there within the next 10 hours to take her. so... any suggestions? thank you in advance! here's the article i found: http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/200...al/index1.html Quote:

The biggest case of GHB drugging that was broadcast to the nation happened about 10 minutes from where I live. Some of my friends were friends with the girls. In this area, we definitely know about GHB.
We took my friend out for her birthday in a limo. The girls all went to one club (Altered State) and one of the other girls and I went to Greektown because we hate clubs. We got a call not even an hour later to grab the limo and come back to pick them up because birthday girl was puking in a trash can. She didn't have much to drink at all but I've never seen her that messed up. We should have taken her to the hospital to get tested but we took her home and one of the girls got her into bed. The sucky thing is that I don't think GHB lives in your system for very long so if you don't get tested right after the incident, it might not even matter. |
See if Planned Parenthood or someplace like that will give her a blood test.

With all due respect (I know it's your friend and I understand your concern so I'm saying this without any snarky undertone), with a BAC of .27 it sounds like your friend just blacked out. From what I recall, at .25 and above most people begin to lose conciousness. I don't know how much your friend weighs or how often she drinks, but 3 drinks (depending on the time frame) could put someone up to that level. Good luck to your friend....and thank God she didn't hurt herself or someone else.

Also, the article you posted sounds very similar to what happened to my friend from college when we were at a party our freshman year. It was just the two of us....one second she was fine drinking a beer and socializing, the next she was stumbling drunk (or at least I thought she was drunk). It turns out she was given ghb by one of the hosts of the party. She became violently ill almost instantly and we took her to the hospital where she was tested (I'm not sure if it was a blood or urine test) and came back positive for ghb. The last thing she remembered was one of the guys giving her a shot of some kind.

If the police have official blood results showing a high BAC, then she'll be hard pressed to explain that away. Depending on her weight, 5-6 drinks can do it. My understanding is that GHB can amplify the "blackout" effect of alcohol...but you're telling us that she was reported to have a BAC of .27. As far as I know, GHB doesn't increase BAC, alcohol does. (Anybody know?) Honestly though? Did she really only have two? I've heard lots of people who drink and drive say that they "only had two drinks". Did they or she drink *before* going out? Perhaps your friend was drugged and *then* given extra alcohol. However, you report that her boyfriend was with her and he did not and would not drug her. If they were supposedly celebrating an anniversary, I would assume he was with her the whole time. Wouldn't he have noticed that someone was handing her these extra drinks? Why would someone drug her while she was obviously sitting with another man? Even though they were celebrating an anniversary, you report that she, "...got in her car and peeled out (without him)...". That sounds curious to me. Did they have a fight? Did she possibly go to another bar to blow off steam after she sped away? She got the alcohol in her system somehow, either before boyfriend, with boyfriend, or after boyfriend. If he can testify that she only had two drinks, that's fine; but he wasn't with her after she "peeled away", right? If she only had a few sips and was "fine" when she sped off, it doesn't seem likely that she went straight home or anything. After all, how did she get so much alcohol in her system and land up in a ditch? I'm not trying to make this more awkward for you or her. :( It just that parts of this story don't make sense to me and it seems like there's more to this story than is being told. These are the questions I would have if I was a lawyer (which I am not). She could claim that the police had a mix-up with the evidence. However, my mom was a Registered Nurse for the Sheriff's Department and she was constantly having to appear as a witness for the prosecuter in court for DUI cases. She'd have to testify regarding her nursing training, years of experience, ability to draw blood, and the condition of the defendant while she performed the inmate medical screening. The defense is going to have difficulty showing a lack of credibility on the part of whoever did the blood draw. Plus, it doesn't help that they found your friend in a ditch 45 minutes from home. That result goes along with a charge of intoxication (drink--drive--crash). Like PM_Mama00 said, it may be too late for her to get tested, she might possibly need to quickly call around to get recommendations on who can test for GHB. I thought it might be traceable in hair follicles - I don't know of that's correct. Your friend will have to be *really* honest with herself and admit it if she did more than just have a couple of drinks with her boyfriend. Otherwise, she'll have to scour her brain for any memory of how and when a drug may have been slipped to her. If that's really what happend, I doubt they'll find the guy; but if they do, I hope they slap the biggest punishment possible on him. Good luck to you. .....Kelly :) |
She needs a lawyer. Seriously.

Thanks to everyone that responded, and also, it IS a hard situation, and navane, like you said, there are parts of the story that DON'T make sense, and i kept asking her, are you SURE that this is what happened, are you SURE that it was 3 drinks? I mean, I'm not there, I don't know her bf, I don't think he would do this, but I guess I really just don't know, that's what it comes down to.
I guess I'm just worried because she doesn't have any good girlfriends down there to help her through this, and I can't go down there.... I am also so thankful that no one got hurt and I know she's getting a lawyer, but the situation is just so messed up, and after hearing and reading about other stories similar, it just scares the crap out of me. (i've been drugged myself and have taken care of a sister that was, and both were one of the scariest moments of my life) |
this is why i refuse to drink in public...seriously! stuff like this scares me, and i try to instill this fear into my youngest sister but at 20, she knows everything:mad: and doesnt believe it can happen to her. i know nothing about being drugged, but i do know alcohol. i hope things work out for her...

A quick search shows no evidence at all that GHB or anything similar can increase BAC - so yeah, your buddy was probably pretty drunk, well beyond what 3 drinks should do to most people (although if she got to 5 or 6, depending on body weight, she could get there without problem I would guess). This doesn't mean she didn't get slipped something, just that it affected her recall - she needs an attorney and she needs to find a hospital for testing, immediately. It's not difficult to test for GHB or Ketamine, it's a simple urine test IIRC and available at most hospitals (I've recently taken a friend to have one performed at a local ER). |
