Worst/best summer job?
A neighbor is back home in time for college and returned with a broken wrist. His "dream" summer job was a white water rafting guide.
He says it was a blast and nightmare: beautiful scenery, time for him to go rafting, some barfing kids, parents letting their kids wander off during meal stops, and sunburn despite lots of sunblock. The broken wrist occurred on his second to the last day. A lady jumped out of the raft as they neared land, flipping it, and him, onto the rocks. Anyone with best/worst summer jobs? Me: the best: working in a bikini shop with good discounts. And it was funny when guys would come in either to supposedly to buy something for a girlfriend/wife or when they did it for real to shop, some were clueless as to the girl's/woman's size. Of course, the shop was walking distance of the beach, a big plus. the worst: tending bar at a pizza parlor. It may sound like it might be fun, but I worked days, which meant "merchants" lunch tim. We had a beer and sandwich or pizza special. I'd get customers who would try to cover up their wedding ring and try to flirt, or ask, oh cutie, are you the special? |
The worst job I've ever had was when I was in college. I worked at Bob Evans. I was a cook there and I hated it. I lasted 9 months and then I left. That was the 1st and only job I left without any notice. I just bounced and didn't show up anymore. It was that bad. I'm a great cook, and I give credit to that job for that. Other than that it sucked.
The best summer job I had was when I worked for a printing company. |
Best summer job I have had is probably being a Census enumerator. I enjoyed it quite a bit and paid well. I could do it with flexible hours. I will do it again once the next Census comes by.
Worst summer job: one word- Cutco. And working in a place where the head would say that I had "zero common sense" and insult my ethnic background rather than let me know exactly what I needed to improve. |
Worst summer job...... well, it wasn't SUPPOSED to be a summer job, but I started in the summer and ended after a month in 2003. I worked for a Business professor who was also the Editor in Chief of a business ethics journal. The work itself wasn't hard, but he was an awful manager. He micromanaged incessantly. He wouldn't even let me keep a box of Kleenex on the desk! He said my phone was a distraction even though it was never on. He was just horrible. After a friend of mine died that summer, I tried going back for a week, and I said fuck it, this isn't even worth it. I told him I would give him two weeks, but I called and said yeah..... I'm not coming back.
ETA: I forgot that I even went to HR to complain about him and ended up bursting into tears. I literally had NEVER cried out of frustration in my LIFE. The lady said "Honey.... you're young, you're smart.... you can quit this job. Plus, we know he's impossible to work for." Best summer job..... worked at the National Library of Medicine every summer from 1995 to 1999. BEST. SUMMER JOB. EVER. Air conditioned buildings, various cafeterias all around campus, a GREAT lecture about AIDS from Dr. Anthony Fauci every summer, diverse environment, lots of young people every summer...and we basically played on the internet alllll day. (If you didn't work in the stacks, which I didn't.) |
Don't get me started on micromanagement. One of the worst bosses I have had was a total micromanager with me and only me. She was always passing off the work to other teachers...but she nitpicked on me, even on the way I walked.
I have had another micromanaging department head- and as a colleague in another branch she was awesome. |
