Calling the chapter house

Hi,

First I want to tell you how helpful these forums have been! I pledged as a college freshman but didn't initiate (long story) so much of this is foreign to me.

My daughter is a freshman at a medium sized state university & has just been through pref day where she was invited to her top two choices. My mother's sister belongs to the one my daughter likes better, but I didn't realize that until this week. When my aunt heard (today) that my daughter was interested in this sorority, she called the chapter to see if it was too late to send a letter.

Our aunt lives in a different state so we don't see her very often, but she was SO excited to hear that my daughter was rushing, and even more so to hear that she was most interested in her sorority!

If the sorority was still considering my daughter after pref day, would this call help, hurt, or not affect her chances at a bid?

Thanks from a nervous mom!

For most sororities the bid lists are already made when the Pref invites go out. Since not all groups consider a niece to be a legacy it's hard to say if she would suddenly be a legacy and jump to the top of the list. She made it to Pref on her own. She'll be fine.

If pref parties have already happened, its not likely to make much of a difference one way or the other.

Bid lists are almost always done before preference (even if some groups don't have them completely done, they have a pretty good idea of where everyone is going to fall)...I don't personally know of any group that has a lengthy membership selection after Preference.* No membership selection session = no chance for any voting or ranking changes for the bid list.

(Not saying that no groups have MS after Preference - but none of the 17 groups that were on my campus at one point or another while I was a student did. 17 out of 26 is a fairly good sized sample of NPC groups, I'd assume. lol)

Also, I don't know of any group that would consider a great-niece to be a legacy (many don't even consider nieces period to be legacies)...so, unless your aunt is someone very high up in the organization, its probably not going to affect her chances much at this point. Had she written a rec prior to the beginning of rush, that may have helped...but luckily your daughter got to pref on her own w/that group, so she must not have "needed" the rec. If they kept inviting her back all the way through pref even without the rec, she should be in decent shape...just need to see how bid matching plays out. Good luck to her!

Thank you

Thanks! I appreciate the reassurances and the information! We'll find out soon if she gets a bid.

A New Kappa Delta

My daughter pledged her top choice today! She's so excited!

I'm bowing out now, thanks again for your help.

Congrats to your daughter and Kappa Delta!

And thank goodness these things tend to work themselves out without great-aunts and last minute phone calls. :)
