need advice answer asap

Hi, I have a rather "touchy" question, but it must be asked.

My DD has been rushing. She really likes Alpha Delta Pi, but she was told that it is a sorority that generally does not have Jewish people, and that it is strongly Christian.

She has been invited back, but wonders whether or not she should "back out" because of what she has heard regarding Jewish people, and whether they would also "back out" if they were to know that she was Jewish.

No insult will be taken, and there are no hard feelings on my part. Just want to know how to guide her.

Thank you.

I was born and raised Jewish. I'm an ADPi. I have several ADPi sisters who are Jewish from many different college campuses. We welcome members from all faiths and backgrounds. We have many Muslim sisters, too, as well as other faiths.

Our organization was founded in the 1800s at the world's first university for women. During this time in American history, people's lives pretty much centered around religion. Not surprisingly, ADPi's founders created an organization based on Judeo-Christian ideals.

Not once have I ever had to pledge a belief that I didn't agree with nor have I been made to feel unwanted or uncomfortable in ADPi.

While many, many years ago, there were religious restrictions, today no NPC sorority requires its members to be a member of any religion or bars anyone from joining because of her religion. We are all are faith-based organizations given the historical context behind our founding, but we are values-oriented.

I hope this answers your question, and I hope that your daughter finds a great sisterhood!

Thank you for your reply, and for your personal experience. I was glad to hear what you had to say. I guess there was a little concern with being in the bible belt so to speak.

My experience at Ohio University 30 plus years back might have made me a little extra sensitive. I remember pledging as a wonderful experience. However, I don't think at the age of 19, I ever "recovered" from having one of my sisters say to me the next year when I was living in the house that I was the first Jewish person she had ever met, and she always wondered what a "Jew" would look like. Don't get me wrong, I do not think that she meant it in a mean way. That comment did strike an uncomfortable cord with me nonetheless.

Once again, thank you for your response. I am sure that my daughter will make the best decision for her. She is a very bright, sweet and beautiful young lady.

Good luck to your daughter.

Any word on her choice?

Whether or not she has the opportunity to pledge ADPi, we would love to hear if she joined a sorority and wish you both the very best!!! :)
