Question About Changing Schools
I know that this isn't exactly a "Sigma Nu" specific thing... however, since y'all are my brothers, I feel that I should get some more opinions. My questions come in 2 parts, but, here's the facts. I'm at Mississippi State right now and am changing from a Marketing degree to a Hospitality Management degree (basically, I want to run a hotel/casino), the school I'm at doesn't have a program like it and I don't really want to go to either of the other public universities in Mississippi. So,
1. What would y'all recommend in choosing a school? I want one where I can have my major and be a decent school. (I'd be transferring in almost as a Junior) and 2. How hard is switching chapters of Sigma Nu? First, we're a colony...and even if we do get our charter before then and I get my badge, isn't it kinda...different joining another chapter? |
1) If it's what you want to do, then by all means, you have to leave. Find all the schools that offer that degree and then compare till you break it down to one.
2) It depends on where you are going. Having a badge would be a big plus. One of my best buds had to leave our school (financial reasons) and transfer to Kansas State. He didn't have any problems affiliating with Beta Kappa, and now has 2 badge numbers. Plus he had a great time  |

Also, if you're no longer be a current member at your old school, when y'all get your charter, they'd have to ask you back for initiation. It's not an automatic thing. Not too far away, but if you don't like the schools in Mississippi for your major, I know Oklahoma State has a really good program (and also has a perennial Rock Chapter with a ton of Alpha Affiliates, etc.). Best of luck. |
San Jose State has a bit Hospitality/Hotel Management program from what I understand...probably a huge change from life in MS though.
Not sure whether or not you'd have to pledge against since you don't have a badge, but seeing as you're an active colonist I'm sure the chapter would vote to initiate you upon paying National. Either way good luck! |

Hahaha understatement of the year...and, I've actually been there to y'alls school, it's pretty nice (try to make it out to Cali every year to see a bunch of my friends out there)...just expensive as heck living out there...besides, we all know California is going to break off and become an island some day. ;) But, the thing is, what really constitutes "the best university I can get into" ... I mean, I know I don't want to move too far on the north-east coast because of the snow and all (what, it's been 7 years since it last snowed back home and even then it lasted all of 30 minutes)... but, beyond something as basic as that... dunno...it's just one of those things where you have a couple of choices, they're all in-state and where you're expected to go....then you start looking out-of-state and there's just so many choices. |
I heard UNLV had a good Hotel/Casino Mgmt program.

Yeah, sorry, sorry, last time I was out there was... July 06, wasn't in Sigma Nu then. But, hey, next time I'm stopping by, believe me.
|
Alright... I think I've narrowed down my choices to these schools:
1. UNLV, 2. San Jose State, 3. Oklahoma State, 4. Ole Miss Just because they have the major I want, they're good in those areas and they're decently cheap... anybody have any thoughts? My main problem with UNLV is that they don't have a Sigma Nu chapter...and I've been trying to find the San Jose State chapter's website, but, haven't been able to find it as of yet. |
If you come down to Okie State and happen to be in OKC, don't be a stranger.
