Non-greeks concept of ritual

So I had an interesting discussion with my husband last night about ritual. He went to college at 13 so obviously did not join a fraternity. He has very little understanding of the Greek system or ritual. Actually, he's never asked me a single question about AOII's ritual which is fortunate. Anyway, we were talking about a mutual friend of ours who is a Lambda Chi from Knoxville. He is now an alum, but texted my husband from campus where he was partying. Somehow it came up the our friend had told my husband while out one night listening to old tunes on a jukebox that Kansas songs make him think about LXA ritual. My husband interpreted his conversation with our friend to mean that LXA's ritual included songs by Kansas. After about a 10 minute argument, I finally got him to understand that a 100 year old organization certainly did not change it's ritual to include a rock song, whether or not it was performed by a member!

My boyfriend has never been the biggest fan of me being Greek (probably because he just doesn't understand it), but I think the silliest back-and-forth we've had about it went like this:

Me: "I'll be back later than usual tonight; I have a meeting and ritual."
Him: "Ritual? Do you like .. make yourselves bleed .. or make sacrificial lamb offerings?"
Me: [blank stare] "Yes. I'll need you to do a load of whites with bleach when I get home."

For a half a second he thought I was serious, but caught the sarcasm and never asked about it again.

This is really funny to think about!:)

While LXA's across the country use the "Magic Carpet Ride" song, it also has nothing to do with LXA and there were no members of Steppenwolf as members. :D

That may be what your hubbys friend was refering to.

Interesting that he was from Kansas!
