New PSU Greek Life Director likened to Sen. Joe McCarthy

It seems that Penn State's 80 greek organizations are getting a new Director of Greek Life who is coming from Syracuse, where feelings about him were mixed.

The article interviews IFC members at Syracuse, one of whom had the following to say: "He reminds me of Joseph McCarthy -- nice man, but has a mission and will get it accomplished," he said.

This should be interesting.

It's one thing if this guy has problems with selective enforcement, but this guy Syracuse Junior guy seems a little petty. What is so wrong with registering parties with the university and having a guest list? For a long time, anytime we'd go to a few certain parties here, we had to sign a guest list so that if something were to happen, our names were there.

No argument here

I actually think a firmer hand might be needed up there -- I heard from friends who were TKE alum that the undergrads had DESTROYED their beautiful old house, and were on the verge of being thrown off campus.

I thought the Joe McCarthy analogy was not only funny, but showed an impressive grasp of history for an undergrad.

While the article was hard to read, it seems that this gentleman is highly regarded.

If a heavy hand is needed then he seems to be qualified for the job.

Most of the time, we are our own worst enemies with the stupid things done!:o

If he is a positive greek implimentor, then more power to him!:)

Honestly, I'd want him for UMASS. The administration is SO anti-greek it's past a joke. They flattened (literally bulldozed the frat houses) frat row, for instance. It also seems like he can get people under control again.

I had heard that was a possibility at umass, but i didn't know they'd actually gone through with it! Too bad. Which groups lost their houses/where are all those groups housed now?

He interviewed for Greek Life Director here this past spring.

Ummm, I don't know that I'd trust the opinion of anyone who considers Joseph McCarthy a "nice man" considering he ruined hundreds of lives and careers without a qualm.

Unless, of course, he's stupid and means Eugene McCarthy. Or Charlie McCarthy.

Not sure of the actual groups but any one with a house on the right side of the street as you come into campus got squashed all the way up to the SDT house which stayed. I have no clue where these guys are now. The vice chancellor likes two of the glos on campus, mine (sigma kappa) and a new chapter of phi kappa phi. They pretty much hate everyone else. I'm not saying that to brag, it's the truth sadly.
They squashed frat row because they felt it gave off an extremely negative image just driving into campus. One of the frat houses has gone to a MCGLO. It went from LXA (a long time ago) to a local (Omega Delta), to ZBT (who had major violations and legal trouble) to a MC sorority (Zeta Psi). It's on the left side of the street so they didn't squish it.
I checked the website, it looks like they've got no houses and are just meeting somewhere in the Student Union.

That's kinda sad. I always liked driving through frat row onto campus. For complete lack of a better phrase, I always thought it looked so college-y.

So there's Zeta Psi, the MC sorority and Zeta Psi, the NIC fraternity? Sounds confusing, unless ZPsi the fraternity is gone now. I think I know that house though, when I was in school it was LXA (corner of Fearing?)--although I'm not ready to consider that a long time ago yet!

Anyway, given all that it does sound like UMass could use someone like this!

Yup, that's the house. ZBT had it less than a year before they screwed up.

That's the entire list of recognized GLOs on-campus. AEPhi never had a house but as you can see, most of the fraternities lost theirs. My boyf, the huge suckup that he is (not really) worked for the Vice Chancellor and got to know him so I got secondhand knowledge about his hatred for the greeks.

can't believe she used the word weed in an article...

...on the collegian...but to each their own.

From what I remember, and 2004 was my last year at PSU, Greek Life was kinda in a tailspin with lack of leadership in the office of Greek Life.

A little tough love is what Greek Life in PSU needs.

Just hope he knows how to compromise with the Undergrad primadonnas in some of the chapters.

It's the Collegian, they don't quite understand the idea of editing and using a thesarus.

I left in 2006. I haven't really got in contact with the greeks I know were up there last school year but during my time at PSU, things usually went from being off the wall crazy to just plain crazy when it came to the IFC greeks.

PSUSigKap 08-15-2007 07:22 PM

When I was there (2000-2004) the leadership in the Greek Life office was definitely lacking. There was a lot of hypocrisy and we could have used a strong leader to back us with the administration. I'm glad to see there are (hopefully) positive changes being made to the system.
