Hi, quick question
I was wondering how competitive recruitment is at universities in Oklahoma? I'd appreciate any help that I can get from those that attend universities in Oklahoma or those familiar with recruitment near there, thanks!

University of Tulsa here. I don't think it was all that competitive. It was nothing like these big school stories I hear on this site (especially the SEC).
Summer (open) Rush was king, and very in-formal. Formal Rush sucked, and was a bit of an afterthought. This is for fraternity rush. It was opposite for sororities. Their Formal Rush was a week long, live in the dorms for a week before school starts, do all the prefs, sprint to your house at the end... |
OU is very competitive, OSU is not as much as OU but I would still consider competitive. Banditone already mentioned TU, and I don't know of any other school in the state having competitive recruitment at all. There's a poster on here from OCU who could hopefully tell you more specifics about that school, but even that isn't in the same league as the big 3.

I wouldn't consider OU or OSU smaller Oklahoma universities (as they are the largest)

I go to OU, but I do know of recruitments at other schools in Oklahoma. Cameron University in Lawton is not very competitive (only two chapters) but I have friends in both chapters who absolutely love it. Southwestern in Weatherford does not have any NPC only locals. According to friends at Univ. of Central Oklahoma, in Edmond, it is best to try to get recs to maximize your options. And my roomate, who transferred from Northeastern State and is an ASA, said their greek system is strong. And she had rec letters. Hope that helps and good luck!

The University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond has 4 Panhellenic groups: AGD, AXD, DZ and SK. From what I understand, recruitment is not cut throat. Formal recruitment prior to start of school. There seems to be an emphasis on panhellenic cooperation at the school as there are yearly panhellenic seminars for all new members and returning members to foster unity and communication. My knowledge of OCU is too old to be of much help, but my best friend was a Gamma Phi there and absolutely loved greek life at OCU. Sororities there are: Alpha Phi, Gamma Phi and Alpha Chi Omega. Northeatern State: fun fact: Carrie Underwood was a Tri Sigma at Northeastern State at Talequah. If you read the rush thread that someone else posted about Northeastern, it sounds as if recruitment there is wonderful with 4 great strong groups, Tri Sig, ASA AOII and DZ. I'm trying to think of other smaller schools in OK-- OBU doesn't allow national sororities, Southeastern in Durant has Tri Sigma and AST, so don't know if having only two sororities makes it very competitive, or very relaxed! I am an alum from UCO, not sure if that is where you are headed but I can give you the info on it at least. There are 4 chapters as you heard and Rush is nowhere as competitive as the big southern schools. In all honesty all four chapters are pretty great, just different. I would definitely recommend you go into recruitment with a very open mind and TRY to ignore the talk about the sororities. Most of what you hear is not true and pretty stereotypical. As far as the pp on recommendations, I went into recruitment clueless with no recommendations and got my top house. I would say from my experience our chapter got MAYBE 5-6 recommendations from the 100-150 girls going through. That being said, recommendations are always a great way to stand out from the crowd and last year the number of women going through was UP a lot! Oh yeah, recruitment is NOT before school anymore, it is after school now. This year it is August 24-29th, Starting with Orientation, then the rounds go Open House, Philanthropy, Theme Night, Preference, and Bid Day.
If you go the UCO website, www.ucok.edu and click on student life, it takes you to the student life homepage. Click on greek life for info on each chapter, and more information including the application for recruitment. |
