Using Correct Grammer
Why is it on our world today so few people take the time to use correct grammer in their speech. It is such a pet peeve of mine!!!!!! I will be walking through the mall and I just cringe when I hear someone use the word 'ain't in conversation. Don't get me wrong, I joke around with my friends and I'll asy things like "You my B***h" to my close frieds, like you're my girl. But when I say it I am aware of the fact that I wouldn't represent myself like that to the outside world.

Sorry...but you spelled 'grammar' wrong...it is grammar, not grammer.
But here's the thing...when we're out chilling w/our friends...we like to use slang. We also have a type of "language" which we use around our friends, that most of us wouldn't use in school. You ought to realize that they don't ALWAYS use "ain't" most of the time...but when you're out with your friends...who cares? And when you're having fun w/your friends...you really don't care how you "present" yourself to the world...you're looking to have FUN...you're not in school writing an essay! Not meant to offend you...just stating my opinion. [This message has been edited by newbie (edited April 07, 2001).] |
Dayum Newbie,
You beat me to the PUNCH! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif |
Newbie,
I agree! But I do wish that people would also be more careful on the internet and boards like this...yes you are having a "friendly conversation" but it is written down. I know it drives me absolutely crackers when I see things misspelled on websites (especially college websites - so much for that "higher learning" thing). I don't have any kids in school, but what is this "whole learning" thing where they kind of say don't correct spelling, just content? That can't be helping. |
Hehe, thanks guys! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
33girl, please also remember that sometimes we are typing so fast, that spelling errors are bound to occur! I just corrected USFStudent b/c...here s/he is, criticizing people's usage of grammar...while s/he can't even spell grammar right. |
I have had some grammar study, and I would like to help you a bit. I rewrote your paragraph to illustrate a point.
Why is it that so few people take the time to use correct grammar in their speech? It is such a pet peeve of mine! When I walk through the mall, I just cringe when I hear someone use the word “ain't” in conversation. Please don’t misundersand. I joke around with my friends, and I'll say something like "You my B***h (sic)" to my close friends. However, when I say such things, I am quite aware that I would not do this publicly and represent myself as such a poor grammarian to the outside world. Slang is slang. Bad grammar doesn't bother me. |
GOOD job Chloeishere!
Oh, I have a question, what does [sic] mean? I see it all the time in various readings, and I have no clue as to what it means! Thank you!! [This message has been edited by newbie (edited April 07, 2001).] |
I am so bad at explaining things, so I will get some help from my old standby Webster's dictionary. Sic is "Used in written texts to indicate that a surprising or paradoxical word, phrase, or fact is not a mistake and is to be read as it stands." I hope that helps. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
