A question about recruitment

Does anybody know anything about sorority recruitment at shorter college?

dukemama 06-29-2007 09:51 PM

Not personally, but this should get you started:

I looked at that but it is out of date (the dates for rush are last year) and it does not give me very much infomation.

Oops, sorry about that -- I didn't even bother to check the dates. :o

There should be an Office of Greek Life on campus that you can call for information. If you can't find a listing for them, I'm sure someone at the school's main switchboard can direct you to the right place. Best of luck to you!

Call Eileen Steinhauer, she's the student activities director! Shorter has 2 nationals, Phi Mu and Zeta Tau Alpha, and a local, Epsilon Sigma. Rush is usually in September!

Go Hawks!

I have one more question. Is it a bad thing to wear a black dress on pref. night

carnation 06-29-2007 11:30 PM

I'd ask Eileen that or maybe her assistant Whitney--I haven't been to the pref parties.

ETA: hey, I just found this!

Some people might say to not wear a black dress for pref because it's very popular for the chapter members to all wear black dresses, so you will blend in. However, your choice of dress shouldn't affect whether you get a bid since chapters don't make cuts after preference (Anyone correct me if I am wrong). If you have a black dress that is flattering and you want to wear, wear it!

Even though many chapters wear black dresses for preference, it's hard for me to imagine it being a bad thing for PNMs to wear black. It's classic and elegant, and I certainly wouldn't have thought it was a bad thing seeing a PNM at our party that looked like she could fit in.

Technically everyone is on the bid list somewhere. But with a lot of chapters, they never reach the bottom of the list... so it may feel like being "cut." For instance, if 150 PNMs attend Pref and quota is 50 and the chapter gets the top 50 girls on their bid list, then 100 girls feel like they were "cut" when they were just too low on the list.

I thought it was so cool when I showed up wearing a long black dress, just like the girls in my house did. It wasn't planned--I simply had a nice black dress... when I went to my first preference party, a PNM outside said that my dress was "soo two seasons ago"...needless to say I didn't feel particularly great about being in a sorority she might be in... but then I went to my house and I truly felt like I fit right in.
A lot of girls had brightly colored, short/cocktail style dresses when I went through.

Wear whatever you are comfortable in--its important to be yourself and not be trying too hard.

I remember my rho chi being thrilled when I showed up for prefs in a burgandy dress. But probably 90% of the girls I've seen around here (Texas mind you) wear black dresses for pref.
