Four Day Workweek?
 

Does anyone here normally work one?

I work at a community college, and in about an hour and a half, our BOTs will vote on whether or not we will go toward a 4-day workweek. As of right now, this will only last for the next 6 weeks. If they shoot it down, then we'll be doing our regular 5 days per week!

They're saying it would save in electricity costs just over $100K/mo. I honestly don't mind working 8-7 four days per week to have a Friday off, but it would definitely be tiring.

If you are on a 4-day workweek, do you like it? Do you see any disadvantages?

in my short work history, i've heard of both, and my current office has a 4 day work week... it seems to work well for those who get to take advantage of a constant 3-day weekend (read: not my workgroup :mad:)

if i had the option, i too wouldnt mind working 8-9/hr days and having a full day off. sometimes you need a business day to get stuff done... go to the post office, doc appt's, catch up on laundry, etc cause the weekend sure isnt long enough!

financialy it sounds good - saving on a day's worth of electricity but is that the only reason? a $100K monthly bill to knock off only 4 days of electricity use is a small fraction of the bill. and also, how does that affect your student body, not being open at all one MORE day of the week?

I don't, but my sister does. She loves it in that she gets to use those Fridays off to volunteer at the kids' schools and to take time for herself, doctor appointments, etc etc. She does have to work year round, but still gets the district's holidays, plus her own vacation time.

Initially, you may feel it being tiring since you'll have to get accustomed to that schedule, but probably once you're used to it, you may find the benefits.

The school system's central office personnel usually takes this schedule in the summer. One of our sorors in another district hates this schedule. She'd rather work 1/2 day on Friday, rather than not work on Friday and not have the extended work day or the work day not extended as much. I believe they now work from 7:30-5 until the latter part of July.

maybe it is a community college/technical college thing...the technical college i work at has a 4 day week for students and faculty. the faculty just has to have a full 40 hours per week at the school. since im a staff member :( im here 5 days...

i would love a 4 day work week. i work 830-5 anyway, by the time i get off i cant do anything (i.e. appointments, etc.) so the schedule would be great for me. and who doesnt like a 3 day weekend? if you're lucky a holiday would fall on that Thursday or Monday and give you a 4 day weekend!!:)

I work a 4 day work week and I LOVE it. I take off Mondays so I get the longer weekend. I work 6:00am to 4:30. Having that day off during the week allows me to take care of doc appts w/o having to use up any of my time.

I loved it. I worked 8:30-7 with Fridays off. What was cool about it was I would regularly pick up 4hrs OT on Friday's from 8-noon and it still felt like a 3day weekend. Also you've gotta love the time management benefits described by the other posters

I don't have an established four day work week but by working from home roughly once every week to every two weeks, I enjoy one of the benefits that I did not see mentioned: saving gas $ (if you have more of a leisurely day and don't have to run many errands on that day). If you have a commute, this can be a non-trivial cost savings.

so what happened? btb, are you getting a 4 day week?

:)I use to work a 4 day work week a few years ago and I loved it. We actually worked 4/10 hour days and could take Friday or Monday off, it was absolutely fantastic. Now I have the option of working from home and also we have flex time so I come in about 6am, and I leave really early in the day...so it all works out or not come in at all and just work from home. :)

Looks like we are! But my dean isn't in favor of it, and there are still kinks to be worked out, but we're supposed to begin this next week for the next six weeks! IF this works like "they" are hoping it does, then we'll be doing this again beginning in the spring semester.

There are also complaints from those that will be affected by things such as child care, those with little bitty people (not spending enough time in the evenings with them) and others.

In addition, there's a rumor that certain folkses (many in my department of student services) are to get substantial raises. I won't believe any of it until I get official word. . . from our local newspaper. :rolleyes:

anyhoo, I'd rather have more flex in general. I'd be more productive if I could come to work at 11 instead of 9.

I work four 10 hour days and I love it. The flexibility is wonderful if you are attending grad school like I am. As a MSW student, I do my field placement on Mondays. Tuesday-Friday, I work from 7:30 a.m-6:30 p.m. Our flex schedule allows for 4 day work weeks, a 9 1/2 day schedule, 9 day work schedule, and a regular 8 hours.

Just my .08 cents.

I truly wish that I had a four day work week. I just want more flexibility than the 40 hour, 9-5, M-F grind.

yes, i currently work a 4-day workweek. we have a choice of which schedule you'd like to work....the regular 8 hours, 5 day a week. work 9 hours a day and 8 hours on the first friday...then work 9 hours a day during the 2nd week and have that 2nd friday off....or do the 4-10 hour days.

at first i thought it would be tiring...but it was like...if i can do 8, i can do 10. i don't see any disadvantages....every weekend is a 3 day weekend for me :)

If I could work four 10-hour days, that would be great, meaning I could leave for San Diego much earlier on those weekends I go down. On the other hand, editorial leaves by 2 p.m. on Friday, so I have a decent schedule.
