question about transfers and families
If you belong to a sorority and you transfer to a new school that has your sorority and they accept you, but there is already a "transfer family" started in the sorority, does that mean that you wont belong to a family at that school? can you not take a little? what happens?
|
It's up to the individual chapter. Some chapters don't even do "families", per se. I know (obviously) who my big is, and I happen to know who HER big is, but we didn't make a big deal about being in the same "family".

ohh hmm ok..i just asked because my sorority at my school has a girl who transfered in and she started her own family that way she could take a little, but i guess its different at every school and every sorority
|
I don't see why a transfer student wouldn't be able to take a little. I guess if you're obsessed with family trees, and that would mess up the family trees...
But I think that's a little silly. If it was THAT much of a problem, they could probably work a transfer student into a family. Just because you're an active when you enter a chapter, doesn't mean you can't adopt a big. |
We didn't do family trees. The relationship between big/little was the only one people focused on. It is different with every chapter.

Then again if bigs/littles are incorporated into your ritual at all it might be different. |
ohh ok that makes sense. thanks

We didn't really do "families" we had bigs & littles and if you were around long enough, you might be a grand-big or even a great-grand-big, but we didn't have twins or cousins or anything like that. We did have one member transfer and affiliate with us, and she was given an honorary big, someone to be a point of contact for her.
We also had one member transfer out to another school and I know she was given an honorary big at that school to help her assimilate, but I don't see why once you affiliate with a new chapter you wouldn't be able to take a little- after all you are then a full fledged member of that chapter. |
when we had a transfer, someone always adopted her as a little. she was free to take a little at the next recruitment just like any other chapter member.
|
We don't have families in our sorority. When a transfer comes in, she's a sister and integrated into chapter programming, which means she is eligible to participate in the diamond sister program with the next incoming alpha class.

lol ok cool! yeah i just wanted to make sure. I knew that i could take a little , but i wasnt sure if i was put into a family if the school had one.
ok thanks for the help :) |
We always leave it up to the member. My chapter had a girl transfer in, and she didn't want another big because she was really close with one from her original chapter. It just depends on the girl.
|
I know of girls who have been "adopted" by a big sister after transferring and the big sister served the same role as she normally would if she took a lil sister - helping the new sister to get acquainted with other members in the chapter, learning traditions and routines of the chapter, etc. But yes, I can imagine that every chapter does it differently...
