Overused words...

In your opinion, what's the most overused word.

Keep it clean. Seriously.

In my case I cringe everytime I hear,

"Awesome!"

Are you really "in awe" everytime you see some new widget? Every time you meet a nice person? Each time someone does something nice for you?

PARIS HILTON

LOL Yeah I agree!

Literally.

No, you did not "literally" have a heart attack when you heard about Paris getting out of jail. You figuratively had one, which is just the opposite.

KSUViolet06 06-10-2007 03:10 PM

actually

CutiePie2000 06-10-2007 03:50 PM

I say "basically" more than I should. :(

"Freaking" is overused, but I suppose it's better than hearing someone using the f-word out loud.

I don't like it when people say / misuse "yourself" all the time, instead of "you", or "myself" instead of "me".

I can't think of any other words to add to this thread just now.

When I saw the title of this thread, and who started it, I knew this would be #1 on the list.;) How awesome am I?

One word I cannot stand, and am glad is hardly used anymore is "bling" (or "bling, bling"). I don't know why, but I hate that word.

The word "like" drives me crazy.

It's especially annoying when I'm talking to an ADULT and that moron uses the word "like" at least 15 times in one sentence. I want to strangle them for butchering the English language.

Dionysus 06-10-2007 07:24 PM

I hate when people spell "pissed", "pist". I see it all the time.

FSUZeta 06-10-2007 07:47 PM

like

Scandia 06-10-2007 08:26 PM

The one that means "female dog" and I only use to refer to female canines. For crying out loud, why does anything remotely out of a given mold that a woman says or does merit her being reduced to being a canine?

I quite like & agree with this quote: "I don't think you should use an old dictionary to try to defend a modern meaning of a word. Language changes over time."

AKA_Monet 06-10-2007 08:50 PM

Let us change it to an overused phrase:

"You know what I mean, know what I am saying?" NO! I don't know what you mean, nor do I know half of what you are saying!

Yes, my sister who is turning 45 this November says, "like" more than Moon-Unit Zappa and I, too, would like to enact strangulation measures.
