Another Retro Recruitment Story
I went through RUSH in August 2000 at Western Kentucky University. There were 7 sororities:
Alpha Gamma Delta Alpha Delta Pi Alpha Omicron Pi Kappa Delta Sigma Kappa Phi Mu Chi Omega For the purposes of this story, I'd like to name them: Phoebe Rachel Monica Chandler Ross Joey Marcel I was REALLY unsure about going through rush. I knew several girls from my high school that pledged Monica. I did not like very many of them and this was the only impression that I had of sororities. My boyfriend really talked me into pledging. He was a year older and already a member of a fraternity. He had high hopes of me being a Phoebe or Marcel...either way though he explained that a sorority would be good for me. I would learn lots and be able to hold an office (which I had done in high school). I thought I would give it a shot but was very skeptical. The girls I knew in Monica were snotty, had lots of money...and just seemed very superficial...they fit perfectly the "sorority stereotype"....I was scared all of the girls in all of the sororities would be this way... |
oh boy! another one with an unknown ending!!!

Welcome to greek chat ... it will be fun to see how recruitment changed at WKU from when I rushed and pledged (yes it was rush then) in 1971.
In 1971 only one chapter had a house and they had just gotten it. Rush was conducted out of rooms in either classrooms in Grise Hall or rooms in the Student Union. |
I met my Rho Chi and really started to get excited! She was SURE we would all find a sorority to call home. We talked about the process, what to wear, what to ask/not ask etc. That night, I hung out with boyfriend's fraternity brothers. They all felt they had to give me their input...while there were some conflicting reviews, I wrote down (in my journal given to me by my wonderful Rho Chi--its so fun to look back on now!) the general impression from the boys:
Phoebe- they win everything, good chapter, good girls. Marcel- also competitive, get lots of mixer bids, fun Monica- known as the pretty ones, usually rich girls (which was right on with the girls I knew from high school!), loud and obnoxious, great parties though Ross- one guys girlfriend was in this sorority, he said they are fun but no one else had much to say about them Joey- pretty girls and fun but aren't competitive on campus, they seem really close Rachel and Chandler- do not pledge these sororities, don't get mixer/homecoming bids and the girls are fat Thinking back, I really did put too much emphasis on these opinions...in the beginning at least. I remember going home and practicing writing Phoebe and Marcel's letters...sure that that was where I would end up! |

I'd like to see an update too. :)
(Though I know how it gets...you commit to a retro-recruitment thread without really realizing how long it will take you to do all the updates. I know it took me a lot longer for mine than I thought it would. ;)) |
Bump.
