Painting the....
I noticed in another thread that there were several people that said "Oh yeah, the XYZ's had X kind of statue in their yard, and people were always painting it..."
What was it at your university, and what's your best story about it? Ours was Rocky the Bulldog, down by the football stadium. Our new member retreat, we went out at midnight to paint the dog. We spray painted him as a ladybug, although our NM Ed person wouldn't let us put letters on him. Not sure the reasoning...who else is going to paint the dog as a ladybug?? And it's not like we'd get in trouble...hell, there's even a "Paint the Dog" game on the school's alum website - it's a tradtion!!:D |
There's a rock on SLU's campus that is the sole "property" of Parks Guard which is a drill team based out of the college of Aviation and Engineering, and though the website sort of seperates itself from the Air Force, it was portrayed to me as almost a fraternity with the Air Force ROTC on campus.
Anyway, their "pledges" or whatever were in charge of painting the rock and changed freqently. Its default was a MIA flag. The best story is that someone came and painted over it several days in a row, someone outside of PG. The PG guys were out there every night redoing it. |
Pepperdine has "The Rock," which is...well, a rock in the middle of the campus, close to the dining hall. The groups that paint it get very creative, and it really never sits unpainted.

Yep, Otterbein has "the rock", which has a very strict contingent of rules around it...we paint it regularly during pledgeship as a bonding activity. Some people do get creative, i think my favorite was a bumble bee.

BU has a rock at the corner of the BU Bridge that is known as "Fraternity Rock" - although obviously some other orgs will paint it on occasion.
Ksigkid and I spent many many many long hours painting that bad boy, or painting a McNugget onto it, or sitting in lawnchairs during greekweek. |

We had "the wall" that was painted for various events- usually the pledge classes would paint it and then different student orgs would paint it to advertise different events. During initiation season, you would have to guard the wall all night to make sure a different org didn't try and paint over what you had just painted.
Oh, and we had the SAE lions that other frats were always trying to paint. I remember the Phi Tau's painting then pink once. I'm sure now having the new member class go and paint the wall would be considered hazing, but it was one of my best memories from I-week. |
we have a cannon, one that has been MIA for the last ten years but showed up last weekend at the 175th commencement. it's been presented to the Soviet Mission at the UN in the 60s as a sign of friendship with Soviet students, left at the gates of the White House for President Nixon in protest of Vietnam, given to the managing editor of LIFE, has turned up in a celebration cake for the University's anniversary, and has travelled the world (and it sends postcards too)

Like most other schools, Kent State has "The Rock' also. It's a big rock on Front Campus facing Main St.
It's tradition for sorority NM classes to paint it with their letters and class year on their Initiation night & take class pictures. This created a problem sometimes because some sororities had Initiation on the same weekend as we did. So sometimes, ABC would finish painting and we would come right up after them and paint over it. During the time before recruitment, each sorority usually paints "XYZ says GO GREEK!" on it (with GO GREEK always larger than the sorority letters as a rule), as part of Panhellenic Spirit Week. The sorority who paints it the most times during that week gets a banner. Fraternities are also pretty big into painting it. During their I Week, the fraternities challenge their new guys to keep their letters on it at all times. Some fraternities would make pledges sleep in front of the Rock after painting it, so no one could paint over it. |
At all schools I attended: the SAE lions. 24/7.

We didn't have an SAE chapter at my univ., but the Engineering Cairn was painted almost weekly:

At Eastern Michigan we had a kiosk. I remember one night, we wanted to paint it so we get there and see the Lambda Chi's painting it. We hide out behind some trees until they finish and leave and then go and paint it. We go home and go to bed and around 3 am, my phone rings.. the Lambda Chi's had painted over our paint job again! We painted it over again and hid out to watch. Sure enough, the Lamb Chops come back. Most of us were dating Lambda Chis and we had mixers with them more than with anybody so we were getting quite a kick out of this. It ended up being an all night thing until we finally just surrounded the kiosk and wouldn't let them come back to paint over ours again!

I talked to an older guy who went to the same college as I did, he was a member of Alpha Gamma Sigma. He said they painted the KA cannon pink and were trying to take it up the stairs of a dorm but got caught by an RA.
