Question about conflicts with class schedule for recruitment
Okay, recruitment starts on a weekday during school at my school. (I don't want to say which weekday, because I don't want people to lookup the school.) I have classes until 4:00 on the first day of recruitment (this class is from 1-4 and meets once a week). BTW, it was the only time slot issued for that particular class. They don't have more than one time slot for the class. And it's the only day I have class that late.
What would happen to me? Will I get cut automatically from the sororities that I didn't attend the parties if I sign an absentee form stating that I had class during that period? |
No one can say for sure. All the absence form does is let the sorority & your recruitment counselor know that you won't be there. It doesn't neccessarily guarantee that you won't be cut from that sorority. I personally would hope that a sorority wouldn't drop you for missing a party due to classes, but those decisions are up to the individual groups.

One year when I was an advisor a girl wrote a note that was distributed to all the chapters to explain why she couldn't make it to the event. If you're that concerned you could do something similar.

Wow, you go-getters. You went to class?

on some campuses, the sororities are instructed NOT to drop a girl who misses a first party due to a class schedule conflict.later in the week they are not obligated to invite back a missing girl. why don't you check with your campus panhellenic office to see how the sororities handle the situation?

At Ole Miss if you are a Potential New Member and you skip class for parties you are automatically released from recruitment. So I would check with your Panhellenic Office. Before each party a Recruitment Counselor comes and hands out at list with names of PNMs who have class or they are sick, and of course no chapter is going to release you because you were in your Freshmen Biology class.
From Ole Miss Recruitment Rules: "Potential New Members should attend all academic classes, lab, and study groups. A POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER MAY NOT MISS AN ACADEMIC CLASS OR LAB FOR THE PURPOSE OF ATTENDING A RECRUITMENT-RELATED FUNCTION. IF SHE DOES, SHE WILL BE RELEASED FROM FORMAL RECRUITMENT AND BE INELIGABLE TO SIGN A BID CARD UNTIL THE FOLLOWING SEMESETER. If there is a conflict between Recruitment activities and academic requirements, the Potential New Member should contact the Panhellenic Council so that an excuse may be sent to the sororities." |
Sunny,
You just need to inform Panhellenic and they will make arrangements. This is not a new situation for any campus that holds recruitment events mid-week. |
At the school I went to, they did seperate parties for those who had to miss regular recruitment activities that day. They did it each day b/c there were some that may have missed wed, thurs, etc. I would definately check with your Panhellenic office and find out if they do that.
