Closed Chapters
Sigma Nu has been cracking down on hazing in the past few years and many chapters have closed.
anybody know the STORIES behind the hazing? What sort of hazing was going on at places like Kansas and Eastern Tennessee? |
Back when I was in school I'd get some stories behind the going's on, but haven't heard much on these. Kansas I haven't heard a thing.
As for MTSU: I found some of the following allegations are listed in the violations: - mental and physical discomfort for new pledges - minor consuming of alcohol - psychological shocks - scavenger hunts - personal servitude required of candidates - kidnapping by candidates and initiates What rubs me the wrong way about MTSU is that the University didn't feel anything was done, no charges were brought by students; it just appears Nationals went in and took the charter: http://www.newschannel5.com/Global/story.asp?S=5954268 MTSU called Sigma Nu a pillar among fraternities. The alumni chapter president vowed to clean house if offending frat brothers are named. He's also urging the national chapter to open up. So is MTSU. The school has been told the fraternity's findings are under lock and key. MTSU conducted its own investigation last fall and found no evidence of hazing inside Sigma Nu. I sure hope they re-open them next year... |
I think there's a tendency to be a little harsh on National. Remember that when someone comes forward with allegations of hazing, whatever is said is kept in the strictest confidence.
I read this to mean that whoever reported the hazing does not want their identity revealed to the chapter, the university, or anyone. Now, I've personally had a candidate turn me in for hazing (this was back when I was L.C. of our colony). This, of course, was clearly retaliatory in nature because the E.C. and I had just run this guy out of the colony (long story). He and his mother called IHQ and complained. I have no idea who they spoke with. Our expansion director at the time gave our E.C. a call and informed him that this was probably the most hilarious phone call they'd received at IHQ in some time and not to worry. In other words, based on this experience, I'm going to think that there has to be something more than the word of a single candidate to bring down a Rock Chapter when the same thing couldn't even bring down a colony. What I'm saying is that the evidence National has must be pretty substantial to merit the responses with our Kansas and MTSU chapters. That same kid went to the university administration as well as I think to the local authorities. No one ever took him seriously. Poor guy ;) |
Awesome insight into the system man. Thanks. It was my view that Nationals was a little "jumpy" and would pull the plug quickly on things.
Your story makes me believe they did have more goods on MTSU then was thought. |
