TKE Polar Bear Plunge
My chapter is planning on doing a "Polar Bear Plunge" in the fall (around end of November, early December) and the premise is that we are going to get people to pay a certain amount ($1-5 per minute per person) for our members to swim around in the river (the Illinois River, that is). It gets cold in Oklahoma in the later months so does this sound like a good idea and do you think we could make a decent amount of money if heavily promoted? The river is only a 10 minute drive from our campus...I know our entire chapter (32 guys) would be up to doing this...Any suggestions that would help would be greatly appreciated...

Sounds too risky...
And that river is nasty. Who would ever want to swim in it? When I'm out there, I stay in my canoe the whole time. On a side note, how is the river? I'm going down to Broken Bow this weekend with the wife. A river trip is in the plans... |
a couple of my friends went floating saturday and said it was good...I'll probably be going on a float trip in Tahlequah within the next 3 weeks...

My husband has done the official "polar bear plunge" with law enforcement of nj for the special olympics. Up here it runs in late february, and the air and water are generally about 30-40*. Not fun. What they have to do, though, is collect cash (or check) donations. No timing - just $$$! It's probably a physical danger to stay in cold water that long. They people who do it up here (last year over 3,000 people plunged!) run in and get out! that may be a better way to go for you. And as a chapter, you can send out letters to alumni asking for donations and tell them when the event is - they may want to come watch!!!
