Christopher Newsom / Channon Christian Murders

So tonight I received an email from my cousin that was well…questionable. I immediately did what I always do when I get these types of emails, I went to Snopes. I am shocked that this is not getting national media attention.

On 6 January 2007, Knoxville, Tennessee, residents Christopher Newsome, Jr., 23, and Channon Christian, 21, went out for a dinner date at a local restaurant, then headed to a friend's house to watch a movie. They never came back.

That is the most disgusting, horrifying thing I have ever read.

WHY did they do that?! Its a strange act in the first place, but its surprising to see several people partake in something so gruesome... usually murders of that intensity are perpetrated by serial killers or someone who knows and hates the victim.

I hope these animals get the death penalty... actually in this case I wish there was something worse than the death penalty.

Is there any news on a motive for this?!!

I never realized that this story didn't get national attention, and it should have! BTW, I live in Knoxville, so it was all over the news here.

Um. Wow.

I still think its odd it wasn't picked up by national media. Murders may be common, but common, this is extreme.

What I thought was that the murders are so gruesome and so graphic that they are hesitating to put it on all the late night talk shows.

Kind of like PG-13 deaths versus this which is like Nc-17.

PAging Delta Alum and other media people, what do you guys think?

My husband's best friend works with Channon's mother. It is unspeakable what their families have been through and continue to experience. I, too, am surprised that it hasn't received more national attention, but I guess I didn't really notice it with all the local coverage and the fact that I know so many people who were friends with them....

This comment might seem silly, but it's really hard for me to imagine how people could be that evil. It was a random carjacking, right? So they had to be so consumed with evil and hatred that they were willing to go to this extreme to victimize people with whom they couldn't have every had a personal impassioned interaction with. (Not that that would explain it, but the absence of personal or historic connections makes this situation impossible for me to even categorize, much less understand.)

It also makes it hard to believe that any justice can be done.

I try to think that the death penalty is wrong, not because criminals don’t deserve it, but because it’s immoral and corrupting for the rest of us to kill them. But then, every once in a while, the behavior is so bad that I think the perpetrator should be put to sleep like the rabid animal he or she must really be. If the accused are guilty in this case, how could one ever believe they could be redeemed or rehabilitated? They seem fundamentally inhuman to me.

I don’t buy in to the whole media conspiracy about the race of the victim; it’s fundamentally flawed, if you ask me. Try to reconcile it with the coverage of Natalee Holloway, for example. It’s just crazy even to suggest it.

Disgusting.

These aren't people. These are animals.

The first of these killers is currently up for parole. There's a link on Change.org to make sure that parole is denied: Deny parole to Vanessa Coleman, Offender #473393 .

I'm a true crime junkie, and I remember seeing this story featured on 48 Hours or Dateline or some show like that a few years back.
