Where do you host w/o a house?
My local sometimes has trouble deciding where to host socials, initiation, etc. without a house. We have used some university rooms but there is sometimes a lack of privacy with those. It's also a little confusing when we want to do mixers with frats that have houses but we don't want to say hey can we come to your place...Ideas, suggestions?

Not in a local sororiy but:
If you have a nearby conference center or banquet hall, you could ask about reserving one of their rooms. Just a note, most sororities do host mixers at the fraternities' house or rent a bar or club. I know my sorority and most others do not allow hosting of events with alchohol in the chapter house. |
not in a local sorority, but none of the sororities on my campus have houses. if we need a place for iniation we usually have it a sister's house. for crush parties or socials we have it at a sisters house, plan something like lazer tag or sky zone(a giant trampoline place) or have it in the park. for meetings we reserve a classroom at school. it was kind funny to go to school on sunday and see the majority of the greeks there.

If a fraternity is asking to do a mixer with you, they should be aware already that you don't have a house. If they don't want to host it at their house, they should be prepared to rent a space off-campus before they even ask.
Since we're in the middle of a big city, we have no shortage of places we can use for events. We have bid night dinner and sweetheart dinner in a particular local restaurant. For most other events, we rent spaces in the area. I can see how there could be much less to choose from in a smaller town, but area businesses should be willing to work with you. Good luck! :) |
We have pretty strong connections to the Hillel at our campus, so for our big events, like initiation, we use that building. However, for things like recruitment and sisterhood events we go to sisters' houses or have them at local coffee shops and resturaunts.

My sorority has always maintained a close relationship with NJIT's Women's Center (our advisor is one of the directors of the center) so we have always had our meetings in one of their conference rooms. We hold all rituals and ceremonies there as well.
Since our meetings are held after night class there is usually never anyone in the building with the exception of the other sororities that hold their meetings in other conference rooms. Privacy is never an issue since it's usually only Greeks in the building anyways. |
