Cosmopolitan Does the DZ Case
 

So I just picked up the new edition of Cosmo today, and they did a whole article on the Delta Zeta situation at DePauw. It definately portrayed the whole thing in a negative light; one of the girls who was a member wrote it. She actually went alum right before it happened, but by choice, not graduation. She was on the executive board of the chapter, and describes very clearly what happened. It's definately worth a read.

I wonder if the fact that it's portrayed as completely DZ's fault will hurt their case; what do you all think?

I don't think one more article, in Cosmo no less, will affect the lawsuit. Could all the negative (rightly deserved IMO) press affect the national sorority? Possibly, but in 10 years I don't think anyone will remember the details of the situation, particularly not the currently 8 year olds who would be rushing that year.

Well, what I meant by the question is that Cosmo IS read by millions of people consistently. If it does come to a jury trial [and I don't know enough about law to know if it would or not] then people who have read the article would certainly be influenced.

I think you underestimate the number of people who read this magazine.

My guess is that most jurors' opinions are more likely to be swayed by a negative article in The New York Times than one in Cosmopolitan magazine.

Little correction- it would be DePauw. DePaul is a different institution affiliated with a different denomination.

No I'm well aware of the people who read this magazine and that no matter how much they like the magazine, the majority of them get their news from elsewhere.

I fail to see how one more article can affect it. As a civil suit, I don't know that it will go in front of a jury (not sure the rules on that) versus just a judge. And if it does, this is the essence of "jury selection." If you're prejudiced, you're out.

Most people who read the Cosmo article have already seen discussions on TV or read other articles online or in papers. At this point in time, there's probably not much the media could do to change people's minds.
