Sports Writer: "I'm Transgender"

Saw this article on the front page of MSNBC today and thought it took a lot of guts on behalf of the writer AND the L.A. Times. I was pleasantly surprised by many of the kind comments in the feedback section, which frankly I expected to be filled with hate speak.

Old Mike, New Christine
By Mike Penner, Times Staff Writer
April 26, 2007

During my 23 years with The Times' sports department, I have held a wide variety of roles and titles. Tennis writer. Angels beat reporter. Olympics writer. Essayist. Sports media critic. NFL columnist. Recent keeper of the Morning Briefing flame.

Today I leave for a few weeks' vacation, and when I return, I will come back in yet another incarnation.

As Christine.

OK, this is sad but true.

I almost said, "It takes to some real balls to write this article."

I guess it's really the other way around in this case.

it's true, i admire hir's courage in announcing this publicly (going with the gender neutral pronoun since he's not a she yet, but will be!)

There's already a prominent baseball writer (Christina Kahrl, formerly Chris Kahrl) who has been working as a transgender writer the past few years.

It doesn't matter to me, if they can write, I'll read their stuff.
