Who's your ISP?

I got disgusted with A-O-Hell, but my free Blue Light service keeps croaking. Who do y'all use for internet service? Good/bad?

We got that whole $400 thing from Circuit City if we signed up for CompuServeThemselves - we now regret it big time! In fact - we're cancelling and paying the $400 plus fees for early cancellation. We've had it for 5 months and it is truly CompuSUCKS. We can't get on, and when we do we're kicked right back off. And I don't just mean peak times - I got kicked off twice this morning and it was only 7am!

If anyone is looking to sign up with them on a deal like we *thought* we were getting - I would suggest you look somewhere else. To further the problem, you can't contact them easily, and when you do, you're ignored. It just sucks any way you look at it!

AXO Alum,

I agree. I have the same deal and it does suck. but I choose to live with it for now. Seems like I get kicked off a lot for no apparent reason. I find that I cant let my computer run idle for any length of time without them kicking me off. If you know what I mean. O well. It serves me for now.

Kevin

AOL owns Compuserve. That's why they both suck! I had compuserve for a brief period of time and I went crazy.

I use Comcast@Home now, which is a cable modem. The speed is great!

There are many FREE ISPs like NetZero and Lycos. You can go to their sites and download the software. 1stUp, another free ISP just shut down last month.

I would also recommend looking into DSL service. Its fast and there is no dialup but it is expensive (approx $35-$50 per month). AT&T, Verizon and some other comm companies offer this service.

I've used AOL for 5 years and I still like it. There were some problems a few years ago, when they had so many new subscribers that they just couldn't handle them all. But now they seem to have everything under control.

I hate those sucker deals that the computer stores try to do, with the instant $400 rebate if you sign your life away with a 3 year MSN or CompuServe contract. I don't think it's worth it, especially if you're not satisfied with the service.

I use Prodigy, and it has been cool. No problems..."knock on wood" http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

ZetaAce, my parents use Comcast@Home and they love it.

Why bother cancelling it and paying the fees? just get a different ISP and also keep CompuServe. You don't actually have to use it do you? Or is it cheaper for you to pay the early cancellation? I'm not real familiar with that stuff, since we use a local ISP.

I've been using AOL since 1994, so I've been through versions 2.5, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 and now 6.0. I haven't had any problems with it, and $21.95 for unlimited use isn't that bad! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

One day when I have $$$ I hope to step up to RoadRunner! I heard that's fabulous!

Well, I tried to hook up with Earthlink because my friends in MD have it and love it (and also, they get a free month if I mention their name!). But they have very few connections in my area and I couldn't get on. So I hooked onto Prodigy and it seems fine. Free would be nice, but hey...Greek Chat alone is WORTH $19.95 a month! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

My ISP is my school. As long as you're a student, it's free. It boots me off sometimes and takes a while to load occasionally. But it's free, so I don't complain. Where I live MSN, Compuserve, etc. aren't available for free. You have to use a local ISP.

I have a BUNCH of ISPs. I had AOL but I got rid of it when NetZero came out (you can't beat free). Now that NetZero is not COMPLETELY free anymore, (it's free for the first 40 hours per month, after that it's $9.95, but the nice thing is they won't automatically charge you, they ask first) I'm using a combination of NetZero and AT&T Worldnet. The $4.95 deal they're running comes with 150 hours plus the 40 on NetZero gives me all the internet I normally use in a month for darn near nothing. I haven't had issues with getting booted (knocking on wood as well) and getting connected goes smoothly.

I've also used AltaVista's free access, but getting connected was a P-A-I-N, I very rarely got past signing in. BlueLight was ok, but not all that thrilling, I guess since I don't shop at K-mart unless ABSOLUTELY necessary.

Not so much. I used to have it and it is only good if none of your neighbors are on. I think I used to live next door to a guy who downloaded kiddie porn all day or something because it dragged.
