Crystal Gail Mangum: Profile of the Duke Rape Accuser

Crystal Gail Mangum: Profile of the Duke Rape Accuser

Wednesday, April 11, 2007
By Michael Y. Park

Some of the details of the Duke University rape case may never be solved, but one thing is startlingly clear: Crystal Gail Mangum, the woman who accused three college lacrosse players of locking her in a bathroom and raping her, has had a very troubled life.

Mangum has been identified by name publicly several times, including by lawyers during press conferences on the case.

According to North Carolina Department of Corrections records, she was born on July 18, 1978, to a truck driver. She grew up the youngest of three children, not far from the house where she claimed she was assaulted in 2006. Durham is a slow-paced Southern town with equally large populations of black and white residents and a history of racial tensions — including those between a wealthy, predominantly white university community and its poorer black neighbors.

I think people are pretty much over it so this "profile" is a waste.

I don't think people ARE over it. (The profile may still be a waste, but until everything is sorted out as far as the DA's misconduct, the unmerited condemnation by the Duke faculty, etc, some people remain interested.)

Well, I look forward to finding someone around here who still cares. Not like I'll start caring again, though.

"Legal Retribution"?? What, are the player's families going to sue her for destroying their lives? I mean, I guess they could......but she's a crack head prostitute. Its not like they are going to get any kind of money out of her.

I believe the correct term is "judgment-proof." Anyway, I'm wondering if they'd just rather end all the legal stuff and get this over with. This has been hanging over their heads for long enough, a civil suit would just keep it hanging over them longer.

I would just rather have the families sue the newpapers and tv media, in addition to Jesse Jackson, Al, and the NAACP.

Plus the DA should be put in jail for life.

I believe they all said they weren't going to do anything else.

I heard that they couldn't sue because he's a public figure and therefore has immunity (this was either tv but I think radio news)

Ok; I can't imagine how I would feel being in their position, how angry I would be at the process.

IMUS: 'WHEN WILL SHARPTON APOLOGIZE TO DUKE PLAYERS'?
Thu Apr 12 2007 10:02:02 ET

Patrick Gavin with FISHBOWLDC reports on Imus's radio show this am...

Barely 12 hours after being fired from MSNBC...

6:12 AM: On Imus' radio program (no longer simulcast on MSNBC) this morning, Chris Carlin, who covers sports for the program, discussed yesterday's dismissal of charges against the Duke lacrosse players.

(rough transcript)

DON IMUS: When will Al Sharpton be apologizing to them?

(LAUGHTER)

CARLIN: I'm unaware of such a press conference.

IMUS: I'll be darned...

Get lost Zippy, go write some Duke rape porn or something.

I found someone who still cares about this case, but no longer from the guilty/not guilty perspective.

Women's groups, rape victim rights activists and concerned citizens are wondering if putting the accusers' information out there is premature and dangerous. But the same argument was made by others for having the lacrosse players' information out there before a "sound case" was established.

FSUZeta 04-12-2007 02:26 PM

when women make false accusations of rape or abuse it can make it harder for a legitimate victim to be believed. i think that that is a more important subject for women's groups, rape victims rights activists and concerned citizens to concern themselves with.

It hasn't been proven that the accusations are false.

It has only been established that there isn't enough evidence to go forward.
