Finances
Hey everyone! im a freshman at lsu this year and i honestly had no interest in going through rush this rush year, but after being on campus and seeing how many people go greek i really feel like im missing out. i would absolutly love to join a sorority next year theres just one problem. My family recently went through a traumatic change and now our finances are a little tight. i was wondering if anyone else maybe had trouble paying their dues and if they know of anything that i could do. also if anyone could give me a broad generalzation of how much it costs that would be great! thanks!

The website says $2500-$2700/year. And keep in mind that it costs $230 to rush, and Soph+ have a hard time getting a bid. I'm not saying you shouldn't try if you really want to, but I know $230 is A LOT of money when finances are tight - especially when it might be all for nothing. |
you really need to determine if you would be able to swing the cost of sorority membership. realize that your first semester as a new member will be the costliest-you will have several one time fees such as new member fee, initiation fee, fee to purchase a badge. you will have to be current on all your payments in order to be initiated. if you are unable to pay your bill, you may ultimately end up being financially expelled.
the best thing for you to do would be to stop by the greek life office and see if they have financial information on the sororities that you could have. then you could take that information home, share it with your parents and see what they say. |
In addition to dues, there are other costs associated with being in a sorority. Sororities have formals, mixers, and date parties which some sororities require you to pay for out of pocket. If you want tee shirts or other mementos from those events, those cost money too. There are also meal plans that some sororities require members to purchase. Living in the house is also a financial commitment. There are also fees for those who do not live in the house called parlor fees.
My particular chapter had a system of payment plans so that everything wasn't due all at once. I'm not telling you this to discourage you. It's just important for you to have an idea of whether you can truly afford this before you rush |
It's $230 to rush!? What do they do with that money??/?!!!
I think my dues were that much one semester... |
