Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating the death of a UNCC female sophomore whose body was found Sunday morning.

Police said the death has been classified as an accident. Police said Sunday evening that they were still investigating the cause of death.

The 20-year-old English major, who lived in a room by herself, fell out of a 10th-floor window in Sanford Hall, Bland said.

A student found her body about 10:20 a.m. and called campus police, he said. Emergency officials responded as well, he added.

A counselor met with students at Sanford Hall on Sunday, Bland said.

The woman was a member of Sigma Kappa Theta[sic]* sorority, which she pledged two years ago because she wanted to meet new people and get involved in community service, according to the group's Web site.

She listed music, singing, poetry and the outdoors as her hobbies.

She was a member of The University Chorale and of The Charlotteans, an all-female choir group, according to UNCC's Web site.

The woman, from New Bern, listed her grandparents as her emergency contacts, he said. The grandparents couldn't be reached for comment Sunday.

I know I have a hard time expressing my feelings about these things, but this is terrible for her, her family and friends and her chapter :(

*I know this article says Sigma Kappa Theta. The Sigma Kappa chapter there is Sigma Kappa, Theta Mu chapter. Another article states just Sigma Kappa and I double checked the school website, there is no Sigma Kappa Theta listed as being on campus

That is so sad. :(

My heart goes out to their chapter.

Sorority sisters mourn UNCC student
More than 100 UNC Charlotte students gathered Thursday night to remember a student who fell to her death Sunday from a 10th-floor dormitory window.

The 20-year-old sophomore, who was raised by her grandparents in New Bern, was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. Her sorority sisters dressed in black and walked somberly across campus, holding candles as the sun set before the event. They placed luminarias around the Belk Tower.

Students took turns telling tearful stories about the student, then waited in line to sign a guest book near her photo. Police are still investigating, but said they believe the fall to be a suicide.

This is really sad and I hope our sisters can get through this.

Sad just does not and can not cover this.
Best thoughts and wishes to all.
