Greek books
What greek books have you read that are worth the time?
I've heard a few people mention "Pledged" in some posts. So I bought it ($5 used hardback) from Amazon.com One that I read many years ago is Goat Brothers by Larry Colton. It's about a group of four fraternity brothers (PIKE's I believe) and times they went through at UC Berkley in the 60's. I remember it being a pretty good read. |
Books
I read Epsilon Zeta by Jock Young recently, and it was pretty good. The author is a Sigma Chi.

I was forced to memorize The Phoenix when I was a pledge.

One of my friends bought me the Hazing Meri Sugarman books. They are laughable in their portrayal of sorority life and I had a good chuckle reading them, but I can't imagine how terrified I would be if I read them as a PNM.

Loose Change by Sara Davidson is good.
|
I checked out Broken Pledges from the library years ago.

The Pledge by Rob Kean was an entertaining murder mystery.
Lazarus by Rashid Darden is probably the best book about cultural fraternity life that's ever been written in the history of anything, everywhere. |

I've also read "Sorority Sisters", which is about a BGLO sorority. I also read a terrible "horror book" by RL Stine, or similar type of author, about these crazy things happening in a sorority, and it turned out that it was one of the pledges, who had MPD and whenever the "evil" personality would take over, she would do crazy things that made the girls feel threatened (chop up their clothes in the closet, etc.). I can't remember the name of the book as it was rather forgettable. |
Somewhere on GC we have a really good thread about books about Greeks, including some quality literature. I'm sure I mentioned Heartbreak Hotel and a couple of other books by Anne Rivers Siddons, an Auburn Tri Delt alum.

Carnation, I seem to remember the same thing. I mentioned "Let's Go Play At The Adams' House" (I think) - I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy! |

Sorority Sisters is written by Tajuana Butler (sp?). It is light reading but wasn't bad. I am not sure how accurate it is in its portrayal of the BGLO pledge process.
Siddons is a great writer. I don't think I've read a book of hers that I didn't like. |
here's a great movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0417056/
