apartment essentials
'ello everyone!
i was wondering, for those of you living in apartments this coming school year, what are you "essential" decorating items? i have three strands of multi colored lights, an inflatable sheep (i love sheep...not in the biblical sense) and a life-size cutout of "the rock", just for starters. what are YOUR essential items? etienne sigma alpha iota ------------------ "red is the color of music and has been since the very earliest of times. the caps of faeries and musicians are well-nigh always red."~*~w.b.yeats "I think that happiness is when you can let yourself feel every emotion you want at any time instead of being a lying little fuck." - Tori Amos |
Etienne,
My apartment is full of so much stuff now, I wouldn't know where to begin! But when I was in college, as long as I had the basic essentials + a house plant, I was happy. Me and my roomate were the typical BROKE college students so we didn't have much more than that. Now I'm 'older' (still young but in the next 'stage of life') so it's a little bit different. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Here's a website I think you might be interested in, it has some good tips: http://www.digsmagazine.com ZetaAce |
my mother is really hating it, but I have (well I'm in the process of) completely turning my place balck and white.
I'm getting silver carpet. Black furniture EVERYTHING (well my refrigetaor is white, but I found an all black stove and microwave though) and pure white (wipeable) walls. I love it, she says it'll looks like I'm in a black and white movie But I had to keep one room colorful and that's my bathroom. It is blu and gold (my sorority's colors) right now I'm looking for a full-size black canopy bed. |
Blu_Theatrics- You can get a full size black canopy bed at IKEA (at a reasonable price!). I saw one the last time I was in the store. If you don't live near a store you can get a catalog from http://www.ikea.com .

Thanks so much, but I just found jcpenny on-line furniture store and ordered one. It's only 199.99 plus 25% off. I'll see what it is with tax and shipping when it shows up on my account I guess, but I am sooooooo happy. I also ordered some sheer white curtains to go around it.... I think I need a bigger place......lol http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Quote:

When I went to Korea, of course I had to choose the really important stuff cuz you're only allowed to have 2 suitcases. I must have my favorite books around me and be supplied with a new, enjoyable book at least once every 3 weeks.
Other than that, well. My first time here, I had a tv, a washing machine (I need one of those), and a mat and just slept on the floor. As long as I have a fridge, tv, and washing machine. I'm fairly happy. Having some cute animal in the near vacinity also increases the quality of my life (I've had 10 hamsters over my life). |
Hmm, I love my bed because it's the first thing (big thing) I took out on credit and worked off all by myself. I am so proud of her.
Then, can't live without this damned computer. But, I love mirrors (yeah, I am vain, oh well - gotta love me, or no one else will, right?). I have them everywhere. And I love blue glass. Don't know why. It's just so pretty. And Candles. Can't live without candles. |
Asia, I totally agree with you about the candles...I love them and they smell soooo good. Ok, well I don't have an apartment yet, but if I did I would need lots of those little decorative pillows-I think they are so cute and they are perfect for those days when you just want to chill on the floor. I love picture frames too(I have so many of them in my room filled w/ pics of my friends). Ummm, I think that would be all I want besides some really great furniture:-)

I'm happy with a couch, tv, vcr, stereo, computer, and a case of beer in the fridge. posters make a place nice and homey too

my father and i made the most wonderful thing for my apartment this week...and it was SO easy!
i made a small waterfall for the apartment next year! i went to home depot and bought a rectangular-shaped flowerpot that was pretty deep and a small fish tank filter *can fit in the palm of your hand* as well as some 1/2 inch tubing. my dad and i went into my backyard, where i have a pond and got some small pieces of slate rock. then we went into my basement, took a drill and a special bit for the drill and drilled through the slate rock. i chipped off some ieces for a more "flowing" effect with a chisel and stacked them on top of each other. i ran the tubing through the rocks and connected it to the fish tank filter. then, i poured water into the flowerpot where it flowed through my fish tank filter, up the tubing and out the top of the rock, trickling down. it's the prettiest thing! when i get to the apartment, i'm dying the water a light blue or light purple color with some food dye, for effect. it's SO easy to do and MUCH better than spending about 250 dollars on a store-bought fountain. etienne sigma alpha iota ------------------ "red is the color of music and has been since the very earliest of times. the caps of faeries and musicians are well-nigh always red."~*~w.b.yeats "I think that happiness is when you can let yourself feel every emotion you want at any time instead of being a lying little fuck." - Tori Amos |
damn you're creative!lol!

thank you SO much preppie...
that means a lot to me, really. i truly pride myself on being creative. i'm always re-designing my clothes *sewing sequins to the bottom on my jeans, adding things on for effect* things like that. i love making things like coffee tables, shelves, curtains...i recently made a banner for my sorority that we can hang on the first day of school. so thanks preppie, you made me day! etienne sigma alpha iota ------------------ "red is the color of music and has been since the very earliest of times. the caps of faeries and musicians are well-nigh always red."~*~w.b.yeats "I think that happiness is when you can let yourself feel every emotion you want at any time instead of being a lying little fuck." - Tori Amos |
I just moved into my new place this Saturday, so I'm starting to get the essentials together. And thanks to the rest of you for helping me get some wonderful ideas!!! Here are my essentials so far:
1) Bath & Body Works scented jellies for the bathroom. I just got my pumpkin spice one today. Gotta have that. 2) Bathroom coordination. I have a bathmat, shower curtain, and toilet seat cover all in a royal blue with fish all over it (thank you Wal-Mart). 3) I gotta have my futon. It pulls out for those nights when I don't feel like walking the 4 feet to my bedroom, and it's got a big fat comfy mattress on it. 4) My VCR. I am a movie rental ADDICT. Even worse than I'm addicted to greekchat. I rent three movies every two days, and I'm getting to the point where I've seen everything in the video store and the people that work there know me by name. I have movie rentals budgeted into my monthly expenses. 5) I have to have bookshelves everywhere. I'm a political science major, which means my text books are basically outdated every semester. That means I get NO money to return them, so I have stacks of political science texts all over my apartment. 6) Corn dogs and fruity pebbles. Provided those are in my apartment, I will survive. 7) FISH. Gotta have the fish. They're the most low-maintenance pets I have ever had, even considering cleaning the tank every 2 weeks. However, my roommate drowned them in beer, so now they're brain damaged. One of the reasons I moved out. 8) Leopard print everything. I like the black & white theme as well, so I have black & white leopard print everywhere, including pillows on the couch and a bedspread. 9) Pictures of children. I've mainly been collecting drawings and paintings of German children, being that's my heritage. I also have a few Anne Geddes, which always make me smile. Anyone have any suggestions where to find artwork of children? 10) My curtains. I couldn't find black & white curtains to go along with my black & white apartment, so I went to the wonderful Wal-Mart, found some cheap leopard print material, and used fabric glue to hem and add fringe to my new curtains. It took probably 3 hours tops, and they look awesome! I have quite a few odd needs I guess... LOL! [This message has been edited by NoLongerGreek (edited August 15, 2000).] |
