Interesting....I've always wondered about the Madison Square Garden thing. Was there ever a garden there? Maybe they built it over a garden. Is there a garden near by? Maybe the person that built it was really into gardens?
I could go on, but I'll spare those who are reading this http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif And what IS a Knickerbocker? Now they're the Knicks. What's a Knick? I mean, I know what a knick is, but does it have some alterior meaning when referring to the b-ball team? I have no idea what a Met is either or why 2 negatives make a positive. But I can bet that if you robbed 2 people, you'd still end up in jail. LOL! So I'd avoid robbing 2 people. Hey have you ever wondered that since the technology age or whatever if there could be possible other Wonders of the World? Why did they just stop at 7? How come they (whoever "they" are) can't add more? Hmmmm.... |
Ok, I have one to add to this.
~~*Do you ever wonder why the food that is so bad for you (like donuts and cake and cookies)tastes soooo good. They should make the food that is good for you taste better, and then everyone would be so much healthier. And then they should change it so that the food that is bad for you doesn't taste so great. I think that would make everything so much better-lol, I know it's a strange idea but I always wondered what was up with that! |

Corbin, you're right about what knickerbockers are...When the Dutch first settled in New York, their style of dress became very popular, as well as the actual word "knickerbocker". When it came down to naming New York's b-ball team...the final choice literally came from drawing the name from a hat. Knickerbocker was the named that was drawn the most, sooo Knickerbocker it was/is!
The word knickerbocker was so popular here that, before the basketball team got the name, there was a baseball team from Manhattan called the Knickerbocker 9. Go figure! Now, as for the Mets...I have no idea. Metropolitan sounds like a pretty good guess though...or maybe it's short for Metropolis. I'm a Yankee fanatic, so I really don't care too much for Met history. I'll have to get back to you all on Madison Square Garden. That's a dam good question! |
Have you wonder . . .
why they called it MAdison Square Garden when it's in 7th Ave, it's roung and there is no garden.
what a Knickerbocker mean. what Mets mean. (Yankee fan, they are my sworn enemy, beside Red Sox) why two negative equal a positive. So if I robbed two person, that make it ok? more to come. ------------------ I have sold my soul to the evil corporate world. I'm quite happy about it. -Anynomous |
Ok, now I didn't even think about the pants. I completely forgot. Maybe cuz I was thinking in terms of how b-ball teams usually are named after something that is strong or something that causes strength or power. But that is some interesting history there. I learn so much from GC!
Let's find out about Madison Sq. G! I'm curious about that. And Honeybee, I was thinking that same thing! They should definitely make health foods taste better. I think they are trying too though. There are some things that are healthy that taste pretty good...what those are right now, I can't tell ya (it's late). But I'll think of it later http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif |
Madison Square Garden was originally a railroad station on Madison Square that was converted into a boxing arena. It was moved to Penn Station's site in the 60's and made into a much bigger arena. I know it had other locations in the city, I don't remember though.

I think what DeltAlum is referring to is the fact that there have been several incarnations of the building known as Madison Square Garden. The name always stays the same as does the round shape.
I don't like MSG; the security people there are mean. I was doing PR during the Benson & Hedges Blues Festival a few years back and when I went to go into the press box a security guy didn't want to let me in. Said that I looked too young to be working in the press box and I either bought or stole the press pass I had around my neck. I had to go to a payphone (this was before cell phones) to call my boss to come out and get me! Back to our reguarly scheduled thread... |
