Sorority food
A comment I read on another thread got me to thinking . . .is there any food especially associated with your GLO? For Gamma Phis, peanuts and olives are a long-standing tradition. Depending on who is telling the story, another group (Alpha Phi? Fraternity boys?) broke into the Gamma Phi Beta banquet room and stole all the food for a post-initiation meal - except for the peanuts and olives. So, peanuts and olives are traditionally served after initiation. There is even a "Peanuts and Olive" song in the old songbook.
More recently, my alumnae groups in Texas always served what we called Gamma Phi dip - equal parts artichoke hearts, mayonaise, and parmesan cheese - whip it all together in your food processor - put in oven-proof dish and bake until bubbly and brown on top. Yummy on crackers. Any other interesting/and or tasty food traditions? |

Great question!
Baked Alaska was a Chi Omega dessert tradition at many National Conventions. (Probably started during the many years Convention was held at The Greenbrier.) It's quite a spectacle when they dim the lights and the wait staff enters with trays of flaming Baked Alaska!

The meals at Alpha Gamma Delta conventions have a reputation for being in red, buff, and green.
The Strawberry Soup at the Chicago Centennial kinda threw things off. It was pink. |
It wouldn't be a ZTA event without Chocolate covered STRAWBERRIES!

Giant cookies at a cookieshine for Pi Phi!

The chapter at the Univ. of S. Carolina has a dessert called Kappa Delight, and the recipe is only given to alums. The seniors are given the recipe at the Senior Tea in anticipation of their impending alum status. It's a big deal--the seniors can hardly wait to finally get the recipe. I've made Kappa Delight for recruitment and other special occasions, but the chapter doesn't serve it for recruitment anymore (I think they might serve it at the Bid Day party though).
Kappa Delight is so absolutely scrumptious! It's chocolatey, gooey, and nutty--YUM!!! Funny thing, everyone's turns out a little differently--I think that's pretty neat and symbolic of our individuality. :) I don't know of any food that is Kappa-specific though, and Kappa Delight is only done at our USC chapter as far as I know. |
We have a certain punch we serve at theme night. DG does too...but their recipe is secret (alums get it). Ours isn't.

At my chapter we had something called Kappa dessert that we would have for "important" formal dinners: scholarship banquet, Founders Day, Initiation, etc...
All it was was an oreo crust, mint chip ice cream softened and spread over the crust, chocolate syrup drizzled on top and then refrozen. Super easy, but we always looked forward to having it. |
Interesting...I see a "theme" developing...desserts! :D
