Graduation Cords
 

I know it seems kind of early, but I was just curious if anyone had cords or stoles for graduation and where you ordered them.

APO has graduation cords available on our national website.

Alpha Phi Alpha kente stoles are available all over the place -- any reputable Greek store will carry them or can special order them.

I ordered my stole from sororityspecialities.com. I'm not sure Theta is on there. But I saw a LOT of sites that let you custom make them if you order early. Cords are easier because you're just matching colors, but I love my stole :D and some people have so many cords you don't know which is which any way.

Collegiate Regalia.

I didn't even realize GLO's had them. I was supposed to get an Order of Omega one but it came in too late for my graduation, and it was supplied by the Greek Life office at my college.

That a fairly new thing for our on-line store. Before that, people were more or less on their own if they wanted them.

There also exist APO stoles. I know I've seen them in the APO store at convention, and there are on-line sources for them.


A word of warning. Be sure to check if its ok with your school to wear the cords/stoles. Some may not allow them.

Funny story. Its a traditional thing in US schools that the color of your tassel and cape is particular to your major. (yes, there is an official list of these colors). One school apparently decided that ALL tassels would be black, because some felt that wearing gold tassels meant 'honors'. Guess they didn't understand what the color traditions are for tassels.

Well and some schools wear a cape for undergrads, some have one only for grads and up.

Our school did the proper tassels but you could double color if you had a double major in different colleges/fields or if you were honors as well.

Actually, its really a hood, not a cape. AFAIK, its traditional only for grad students to have hoods. I don't recall have a hood when I got my bachelors degree.

A big pain for me is that the color for engineering/computer science, orange, is pretty close to apricot, the color for nursing. (apricot is a little darker then orange).

Georgetown's academic dress was a black robe (officially donned at freshman convocation), a black hood (blue and gray interior, white "border" for the arts, gold border for the sciences), and a black cap with black tassel. Gold cords were given to wear on the robe for honors, other cords, sashes, stoles, and leis were allowed.

I now know why my undergrad tassel was orange. I was bummed about the color.

I've never heard of undergrads wearing hoods. I wore a hood along with my stole for my Master's graduation, as did others.

Yeah, hood. Thanks :p Although some of the professors wore capes of some sort. And I would have guessed the apricot was lighter than orange based on my crayolas :)

I looked up college regalia when I was gradating, and basically there's just a lot of variation off of the "standard" I can't remember which school had bachelor's recipients wear hoods.

Well, doctoral garb gets more fancy, plus, some schools have very different traditions (you get the little puffy hats instead of a mortar cap).

I also recall my masters gown was a little different in the sleeves from my bachelor one.

Be glad you weren't a music major -- we got pink. I liked the JD purple much better.
