hey i have a question about college life. i'm going to be starting this fall and i wondered how you carry all your stuff to class if you have a lot of classes that day? i am not living on campus so i won't be able to go to my dorm room after class to get another book or anything like that. i guess i'm just used to the highschool atmosphere where you can stop at your locker after every class for a book. thanks....i was just curious how you did it.

An excellent question! Some colleges will let you rent out a locker. If that is available to you, then definitely go for this. It can get exhausting carrying around heavy textbooks from A->B all day long.

Another thing you could do: join a club or greek letter organization http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif, as one benefit may be that they have an office where you can safely leave your stuff for a few hours.
(Of course, that is NOT the sole reason why you should join, merely a side benefit!)

Lastly, if your school has a gymnasium, recreation centre, or sports facility, they might have lockers there that you can use to store your stuff.

You know you don't have 8 classes a day in college...Figure if the average high school student is in school 35 hours a week, college cuts it to around 14. Big difference, and most people don't have more than 3-4 classes a day. Say goodbye to that normal atmosphere.

get a strong backpack (l.l. bean and northface make good ones for less than $40), or for the "cuter" option, some people have started carrying books in messenger bags. lots of people carry bags even if they do live on campus.

You know for most classes you don't carry the book to class. Sure you have your notebooks/binders for notes but no books. You can separate your notebooks based on your schedule. 10am and 11am MWF classes in one, 2pm and 4pm Tuesday-Thursday classes in another. Don't worry about this small stuff, you will figure it out.

LEAVE THE BOOKS IN YOUR TRUNK!!!!

That way if you feel the need to study you trek out to your car and then to the library.

If there are lockers for rent get one at least for one semester/quarter. I never used one because they were by the res halls and commuter lounges. It was a million times easier to catch the shuttle to the parking lot and hike to my car than to hike to a locker.

Your schedule will be completely different every quarter. And unfortunately once you start taking classes in your major the schedule is more and more whack. I always swore that "I'll never again take an 8AM class." Guess when my required classes were? It blew big time. Which leads me to a disagreement with sctroy...

Never take a class that starts between 10am and 2pm! You'll easily spend a half hour searching for a parking space at these times. Then another half hour waiting for the parking shuttle! I know that not all schools are like this, but if yours is...9am or 9:30 classes are the latest morning ones you should sign up for. Like I said 8am blows but I never had problem with parking at these hours.

Prepare to spend your life on campus. I had 8am-9, Noon-1, and 7-9pm classes. Plus throw in all the activities, like meetings, sports, rec classes etc. You'll only go home to sleep.

You forgot Financil Aid......those people should change there name to the "It's our job to make you wait for hours to tell you that five months ago you should of gave us this paper that we forgot to tell you about, but it's still your fault so have a seat and wait"

Really odd hours (I had a class at 8 in the morning till 10 then was off till 5 in the afternoon till 7), if you went to my school, get a nice hiking boots for those snowy days.
Get ready to fight for parking space.
Get ready to yell at:
(1) Financial Aid
(2) Financial Aid
(3) Financial Aid
(4) Registrar (they will messed up your schedule)
(5) University Police (they will ticket you)
(6) Financial Aid
And remmember, never ever take a class before 10. Trust me on this. Commuting and parking is hell before 10. I talk to other people on other campuses and they agree with me. Other then that, have fun.

sctroy is right on! You will rarely ever need an actual textbook in your class - maybe a study guide or course supplement, but not the actual book. You will have assigned reading for outside class, and then take notes while in class.

So, get two big spiral notebooks divided into 3 or 5 sections (one for MWF, and one for TTh, like he said). Take notes in them each day, and then at the end of the week you can take the pages out and transfer them into a 3-ring binder specifically for that class (so that they are all in one place).

All you'll ever need is your spiral notebook and a pen!

unless you have a lab, math or english class there is no real reason to bring text books to class, you should be able to get by with some notebooks, i don't even buy texts for some classes

When I was in college [OMG that sounded really scary] the only days I'd bring my textbooks to class were the days of study sessions and exams. Those were in the first maybe two years of college. Eventually heavy textbooks became a thing of the past as more professors like to create readers that were available for purchase.

Anyone who has more than 3 classes a day is a crackhead.
