Recipients of Kennedy Center Honors The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC created its Honors awards in 1978 to recognize the lifetime achievements of selected American performing artists. Over 29 years, 152 individuals have been recognized. Of those, 31 have been African-Americans, a figure that represents just over 20% of the total number of awards. Listed below, by the year in which they were honored, are the names of the African-American recipients.
