question...

i am interested in pledging a soririty at my school... BUT...

there is a member who i knew from h.s. who is sort of snobbish and probably doesnt want me pledging. how much power does 1 member have? what if the member is an older sister? holds a position? i have never done anything to her and she has no real reason to dislike me, so how strongly does this issue impact my chances of getting a bid?

Hey there,

In my fraternity if one brother says "drop" we don't even consider him. Frankly, if you have two brothers or sisters in your case who don't get along it creates tension and strife in the chapter. Plus, if you want to join a sorority, a sisterhood, a family, do you really want to be part of the family that your (apparent) high school enemy is in? Seems kind of strange to me.

Well, it's obvious that fraternities and sororities handle their membership selection differently.

While I can't go into detail about membership selection -- her high school (and I stress that) enemy is just one member out of a house full of sisters. If a sister told me to drop a PNM just because she had some beef with her in HS, I'd kindly tell her that I had a mind of my own.

By the time I was a collegiate upperclassman, HS stuff was the LAST thing I thought about.

Of course I don't know this girl so I can't tell you for sure what your chances are of getting a bid, but it won't hurt to at least meet the rest of the girls in the sorority. If you have a good GPA and a great personality I don't see why you shouldn't just try.

Just to add that even among fraternities, it may be handled differently. Heck, it may even be different from chapter to chapter *within* a fraternity.

thank you, i appreciate your feedback. her problem with me, whatever it may be is not mutual and i respect this woman and would be willing to swollow my pride for the greater good. also, the girls that i have met have been awesome and have tried to rush me, so as of yet, i dont think she has gotten involved. i would hope that this particular sister would let the group get to know me and make a decision about me on their own.the last thing i would want is to cause conflict inside the group, i just like the girls a lot and think im a good fit.
wish me luck! ;)

Agreed. The only exception would be if you were this girl's one mortal enemy, i.e. you slept with her boyfriend or keyed her car or something. If you just had typical high school drama-type friction, I wouldn't think much of it.

Hopefully this girl has grown up since high school and is no longer such a snobbish bitch. If not, and if everyone else likes you, she'll have a hard time explaining why she doesn't want you to join.

There were a few people from my HS who went Greek at my college, and the one time any of them brought up HS stuff involving me, one of the fraternity members basically told her to shut her pie hole. It was the awesome. :)
