Obnoxious Future Frat Boys?
 

I know this isn't "new" news, but I happened to Google my high school recently and this article popped up. I can't really say I'm surprised about the content since the atmosphere at my alma mater has always come straight from a John Hughes movie (think Pretty in Pink or Some Kind of Wonderful if you're of a certain age; if you're not, Google him )

I just wanted to get some opinions on whether you all think this was appropriately dealt with or not...

Fox Chapel High: Where it's OK to dress as an alien(ator)

On the Friday morning before Halloween, 10 to 15 students, all of whom are residents of the Fox Chapel area’s most affluent neighborhoods (and home to Teresa Heinz Kerry), marched into school dressed as students from Sharpsburg, a less wealthy neighborhood from which a minority of Fox Chapel Area High School students live.

From the moment they entered the building, it was clear who this group of students were targeting. Instead of their usual Abercrombie and Fitch polo shirts and Steve Madden loafers, the "rich kids" donned generic brand athletic jerseys, ripped jeans, and dirty white high tops. Their costumes were no secret and no joke.

And it was tolerated by the administration.

The fact that the administration pretended not to know about an event that everyone seemed to know was called "Rat Day" says a lot.

But I'm not sure, other than telling them that what they were doing made them look like jerks, what the administration could do at the time. Would you have had them hauled into the principals office for somekind of non-verbal harassment, maybe?

I'd make sure that next Halloween students knew that any dress that appeared to be radical departure from a student's typical dress would be considered a costume and wouldn't be permitted.

Sounds like they are pretty unfratty to me.

Remember, please, that they're highschoolers in a region of the country where the mullet is often still cited as a socially accepted hair style.

They're doing the best they can with what they've got.

Oh and, by the way, that last overhead photo posted toward the end of the article is the estate I grew up on. Oh, ok. Actually, I used to jog past it during high school tennis practice. It's the Heinz estate where good buddy John Kerry lives with his sugarmama when they're in town. Don't tell anyone :)

"Rat Day" scurries away
Fox Chapel Area High School admits condoning classism.
Last month, the school instituted a Student Government Constitution hoping it will promote “a positive school climate and in shaping the future of the school.”
The new charter is a direct result of a senior who exposed herself to ugly personal attacks at the expense of exposing an ugly school tradition.
The constitution begins: “All students and staff, regardless of gender, religion, color, socioeconomic status or creed should have the opportunity to be involved in the Student Government.”...
Bernstein asked a teacher if the new policy had anything to do with her article.
"It has everything to do with it,” the teacher told Bernstein.

I'm confused by the new constitution though. Is it just me or does it really not address what the problem was? It says that everyone can get involved in the student government. Granted the whole document isn't there, so I could be missing something. :confused:

KR, we have a store in Shadyside where Vineyard Vines and Lily for men are available, so they really don't have an excuse.

This kind of thing has been going on as long as there have been high school students. Next, please.

I'll agree pretty much. I don think it is acceptable to wear a tie in some certain occassions.
