Locals and NPHC

Can a local organization petition to become a new chapter of a NPHC organization? I know this is done quite frequently in the NIC and NPC, but I have never heard of it in the NPHC.

No, a local can not petition to become a member of the local chapter of NPHC. Only chapters of the 9 organizations that are already in the NPHC can become members.

However, there have been cases where groups became 'associate' members of the NPHC but they don't have the same rights as the NPHC groups (i.e. voting) and they are not bound by the rules of the NPHC.

So the NPHC won't allow another Fraternity/Sorority become a part of it?

No, I'm not saying that. It is possible but it is rare and has only happened once before. Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. became a member of the NPHC in 1996.

For more information you can look at http://www.nphc.org

Oops, I didn't mean to imply in my first message that they would try to become the 10th member of the Divine Nine.

So if XYZ local at State U wanted to become a chapter of AKA, DST, etc., they can't?

Local-No, a local sorority can not become an NPHC sorority (or fraternity) like they can in NPC. However, if those women want to get together to form a chapter of that sorority, that's possible. (See next answer http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif)

EQueen-Different organizations have different policies about that issue. In most of the orgs, the grad chapter in that area is responsible for helping to charter a collegiate chapter. (There are other avenues too, so this is a 'general' response) For more information on how to go about forming a new chapter, the interested women should contact the local grad chapter or contact the HQ of the org to get more specific details.

Along the same lines I guess is this question, how exactly do new chapters of NPHC orgs go about forming on a campus/area where no chapter exists, but there is significant interest, is there a pre-specified protocol?

The NPHC constitution and bylaws state that an Incorporated greek lettered organization that shares the same ideals as the NPHC and its affiliates may join the NPHC if their organization has a National governing body AND has been in existence for 25 years or more on a collegiate campus and cities...
