My guess is that some organizations call their new members/pledges "postulants". In this case, it would be New Member/Pledge Education.

Yes, I know that postulant is a pledge, etc. But what exactly is the education part. I.e, is it the hazing part before they get initiated?

It depends on the organization. Most of them do not allow hazing. Our new member education program involves teaching the girls about our sorority as well as helping them get into the swing of college and get to know each other and us.

Some orgs will haze. Some won't. But no, generally the education part is not hazing. And some hazing will be stuff like dressing up on a specific day or required tasks for the chapter. This is technically hazing, but many people think that this doesn't really fit the term.

I would be surprised if there was an organization (on the national/international level) that allowed hazing.

True, but I'm speaking more on the chapter level.

This of course depends on your definition of hazing, but there's only so much hedging you can put into an answer :p

Postulant is a terrible world. It sounds like a pustule.

Membership education prior to initiation is not hazing. Hazing is an illegal and unauthorized action made without the consent of the membership or the parent organization. It is a poor choice made by immature people who believe that physical or psychological torture is the right way to assess your loyalty to a social organization. Membership education is supposed to consist of learning your organization's history and values, and bonding as a group through healthy activities like ropes courses, workshops, community service events, and attending university events together.

Anyone who participates in hazing, whether a new member or an initiate, should be called a "pustule." Some may have you believe you can't be a true brother unless you jump into a garbage can filled with cottage cheese and sardines, but I would rather think that you'd have more self-respect than to do something so ridiculous.

Alpha Chi Rho has been using the word "postulant" for at least 20 years now (and probably long before that). It's not a reference to "pustule" nor is it offensive. It's a Latin word meaning candidate.

"Postulant" makes me think of the Sound of Music! Maria was a postulant (in preparation for taking her vows as a nun).

:)
