WVU Beta chapter suspended
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07015/754012-100.stm
West Virginia University's Beta Theta Pi chapter has been suspended and its house condemned. The house failed to meet fire code and was overcrowded during a party where alcohol was being served. Beta also failed to register their party and is supposed to be a dry house, according to the article. |
Yeah...that's my chapter.
The language is horrible in the paper. The majority of the code violations were fixed on sat. They just need an inspector to come up and look over things. I have no idea what consequences they will face, but there were not any police reports, or underage/alcohol violations. Basically, no party report and some fire code violations. |
Best of luck to your chapter.

good luck, this is sounds like misplaced paperwork.

Sounds like a witch hunt.
WOW, THE FIRE DEPARTMENT can just hit the door and come in?:( Hope the Fellow Members of BTPi can over come this BS!:) |
Well, the final word is the Beta's are on social probation for the rest of this semester with WVU. They are in a little more trouble with the General Fraternity, but in the end this could be a positive thing and light a fire underneath actives and alumni. Some serious changes needed to be made, and this could be speeding that process up.

That party made headlines in our newspaper, and while most students I talked to were thoroughly impressed, they also thought that the punishment was too harsh. Coramoor, are they taking their time getting around to inspecting the house?

This may be a key point of the whole discussion! Many Chapters feel above the norm and do their own thing when and while they are in violation of school and National policies. But some of the reports coming in are just smoke screens that seem to be used to harrass Greeks. While fire suppresion systems are on all of our minds, the cost can and will put many chapters from all GLOs off campus.:( Until the time that a Or The Bills on Congress allow Alums to donate to help defray costs with donations and tax breaks, we will all suffer. |
The punishment through the school is justified. WVU isn't draconian with their rules, but there a few that you just don't break. The inspection has already been completed. It's just a matter of fixing the deficiencies....which is going to be pretty expensive like Tom pointed out. Nothing that can't be dealt with though.

Your Post says a lot! Now, I just hope they can get things worked out on all ends!:) |
Agreed.

I'm glad to hear that the chapter survived this latest drama. Good luck w/ the upgrades to your house!

I guess in the end this has been a blessing in disguise.
We just re-opened after about a half million dollar renovation. The living quarters are by far the nicest on campus. Additionally, we are ahead of the game now when it comes to fire code updates. The fire system is totally updated and a sprinker system is being installed next summer. While it was bad in the short run, it really lite a fire underneath alumni. |
Congratulations and hope you will do very well in the coming future.
It is important to have a strong Greek presence on any campus.:) |
